Hi,

Since I cleaned out my piggies cage yesterday I noticed my older one (3years) seemed to be pooping less than normal?
When she has done a few poos she hasn’t been squeaking in pain and is still being her normal self.

I’m making sure to give her lots of hay, any advice or know what it might be?
thank you!

Reduction in poop output is often due to a reduction in hay intake.

Switch to weighing her daily (at the same time each day) rather than weekly, for the time being so you can more closely monitor what is actually going on with her hay intake. Any significant reduction in weight in a short period (a 50g or more loss in one go) and you would then need to step in and syringe feed and see a vet.

I hope she starts pooping more. Great advice above.

Hey!

Thank you so much for your replies, I think she has started pooping a little big more now! :)

I’ve also been weighing her daily and just wanted to check this weight is okay:
Monday she was 1170g and just now she was about 1140g?

Is this weight loss okay? and what should I do if it drops anymore?

Thank you!

* also this was just before her dinner, should I weigh her after instead?

Weigh her at the same time each day - the time doesn’t matter but as long as it is always in roughly the same place in the feeding cycle.
Weight fluctuations of around 30-50g per day are absolutely fine. Weight loss of 50g or more is when you go on alert and step in with syringe feeding

Hi,

another concern, sorry! 😅

So over the past 3 days she’s lost 70g?

Monday - 1170g
Tuesday 1145g
Wednesday - 1000g

At the moment we’re planning just to keep an eye on her and phone the vet on Friday is she continues to loose weight?

She’s still eating and being her greedy self, do I need to start syringe feeding her? if yes how often?

I’m sorry for all the questions but thank you so much for your help so far :)

Hello are you weighing at the same time each day? I would be a little worried as it’s been three days with a loss. Is she pooping ok now as you said she wasn’t pooping so much?

Is today’s weight 1000 or 1100? You say 70g but it looks more like 170g loss? If so then that is a lot and you must start syringe feeding. She may still be eating, but if her weight is only heading downwards then she isn’t eating enough hay.

You syringe feed as much as is necessary to stop the weight loss. It’s not a exact science, but instead trial and error to find the amount which works in each particular case.

As it’s a continual downward trend, you need to step in with syringe feeding her as much as she’ll take. Try every 2-3 hours. If she’s losing weight then she’s not eating enough hay. I’d also consider getting her seen by the vet.
