Hi Piggie Parents,

Hope you and your little ones are doing great.

Is this normal poop?

Best wishes

Hi
In guinea pigs, all poos from the first and the second run through the gut have to pass through a mucus barrier at the end of the caecum that keeps the gut microbiome from escaping. Very occasionally, a little of the mucus can slip through. If it is a one off then I would not worry.

Hi,

I have some a few weeks ago. I will keep an eye thanks.
If I see it often does it need dietary changes?

It doesn't need any dietary changes as long as you are on a mainly hay based diet with just 1 tablespoon of pellets and a modicum of mainly green veg.
If it happens a third time, I would perhaps go for a general health check at your own convenience but it may well be that your vet cannot find anything amiss.

The mucus barrier is not connected with upsets of the gut microbiome that can cause diarrhoea or bloating etc. It just acts like a tight net to keep the gut bacteria from slipping through into the area where the poos are shaped; with your piggy there may be occasionally a tiny weakness in the barrier and a little mucus is getting stuck to a poo. That is all there is.
