Hi Everyone,
I have been reading through threads to see if I could find anything similar to what my guinea pig is going through!

It all started about 3 months ago that I noticed my guinea pig before bed started to make a hooting noise and almost cracking with her breathing. However this then resolved itself by morning. She was clear for a few days and then started making the noise again. I will mention she has had no other symptoms and was acting normal.
It came to my attention that it seemed to happen after they come back inside after being on the grass. The pollen has been really high to the point which yellow dust has settled everywhere so I thought maybe this could have caused it. I took her to the vets and the vet said it could be pollen but gave her antibiotics just to make sure. She was on these for 10 days and didn’t make the noise . Then oddly she started making it again. The vet said to keep her on them for 14. After 14 days the sound appeared again and I took her back to which she had a radiograph. The vet said she could have mucus on her lungs but wasn’t sure but everything else was fine and prescribed this powder to sprinkle on her food and keep her on antibiotics. We took her back after a week and the vet was happy and said it could of been pollen.

A week later she has made the noise again after going outside so I have now stopped putting them on the grass. Now tonight the noise has re-appeared!

Sorry for the long thread but I’m honestly at a loss as she is acting normal/ eating normal popcorning/ squeaking for food and no weight loss but this noise does keep appearing. The vet isn’t concerned but I’m not convinced it is the pollen anymore.
I had read threads about possible heart issues and I’m worried that maybe this is what she has and it is being missed. The noise does not seem to be related to anything or have any kind of pattern only later at night.
Any advice would be helpful! My piggie is just over a year old.
Thanks 🙂

Have you eliminated irritants such as perfumes and air fresheners, and dusty hay?

The next step would probably be further testing at the vet - an x-ray or ultra sound to check her heart might be advisable.
It is good they kept it simple to start, but if the issue has returned then it definitely would warrant further examination.

All the best with the vet check. Hopefully they’ll get to the bottom of it.

Thank you very much. She is doing it again tonight so I will contact the vet in the morning! Thanks 😊
