Hi can anyone tell me about pneumonia? I have a very sick piggie, we’ve hospitalised him at the vets, he’s on lots of meds and syringe feed, my cavy savvy vet doesn’t sound hopeful. can I have anyone experiences and be honest, the outcomes. I’m in bits with worry. Thanks

Hi, do you know whst meds he is on? From my experience the best antibiotic for pneumonia is zithromax but it is not licensed for animals so not all vets are familiar with it. There are others that can be used. My vet also gives a diuretic such as furosemide, an anti inflammatory such as metacam. It is hard to say what the outcome will be as it depends on the severity of the infection. It sounds like he is in very good hands and being given the best possible chance.

He started about a week ago, I got him straight to the vets, and he had a weeklong course of co-trimoxacole and metacam, but he got a bit worse, still not eating or pooping right even though I’ve been syringe feeding him. So he’s been at the vets every day (they don’t take overnight), for nebulisation, and he’s now on metacam, bisolvon, marcobyl and emprid. I’m still syringe feeding with Emeraid. His brother Doug came down with it first, but he’s made a great recovery, within a week, but he wasn’t as rattley or croaky as George is. George is going back to the vets tomorrow as I work, and I need to give him the best possible shot, I’d do anything for him :( just absolutely in bits, I’ve been fighting tears all day.
