Hi, my guinea pig snoop had surgery back in january for a broken leg, he had to have it amputated. He woke up completely fine and since has been eating normally, the stitches have healed perfectly and he’s back to being a normal guinea pig. However i had a few issues with small signs of what i thought was a uri (discharge from nose, crackling in lungs etc). It turned out to be pneumonia after the anaesthetic. I have antibiotics and anti inflammatory medicine to help treat it, but does anyone know anything else that might help? The last thing i need is him passing especially after all the stress we’ve been through this year. Thank you!

Pneumonia after surgery

Having a nebuliser was an absolute godsend when my Fern developed pneumonia after a spay surgery. While hospitalised she had very little working lung tissue and was gasping for air even on oxygen.. they all believed she was going to die and I took her home almost against medical advice. But I knew if I could just get her airways cleared she could recover, it was honestly the longest week of my life but that was 18 months ago now and she's her old happy, healthy self now.
Theyre available pretty cheaply on Amazon and you just mix F10sc disinfectant at 1ml to 250ml of water, aim it at the front of their carrier with a towel over the top to keep the vapour in. I was advised to do this every 4 hours at most but once or twice a day is usually enough.
It might also be worth asking the vet for bisolvon, this makes the mucous in the lungs and airways more liquid and easier to pass.
And supportive critical care feeds may help with probiotics just to help him cope with the antibiotics as well as possible.
Other than that, unfortunately it's just time and patience, for the antibiotics to kill the bacteria and their body to fight.

Thank you, is there anything specific I need to buy with it? Is there any good ones? I live in England and I’m using amazon, I’ve never been in this situation so I’m not sure what I’m doing but want to make my pigs better.

The one I bought unfortunately isn't available anymore but these 2 (below) are the closest ones to it, and similar to the ones my vet showed me to buy. You won't need anything else although some of the attachments certainpy wont help and may distribute it into the air more evenly, but I've never used them. They just need charging up then put the F10sc and water solution in the little reservoir and leave it going for 10 minutes a few times a day.
You might notice an increase in sneezing as the mucous is loosened and passed, so don't worry if that's the case, in the early stages my poor girl had a few nose bleeds but this really helped with those as well, passing the thicker mucous seemed to really irritate her nasal passages.
