I am adopting two guinea pigs from a rescue. I had an old bunny cage that’s 30 x 40. i know it’s not the biggest cage but i will give them lots of floor time and things to keep them entertained. The cage is made of pine, and has wire around it. including the floor, but me and my dad used plywood sprayed it with bed liner ( it turns into a rubbery material) to protect the wood, then over that we used a vinyl tarp. then we made a second level, i am concerned about two things, the level is 13 inches off the ground from the first level, we put a fence around it that is 3 inches high. the fence is made of plywood also prayed with bed liner. will they jump over this fence? and what can i put over the plywood to protect them from chewing it. will they also chew the pine? I am going to provide them with lots of things to chew on but i want to be safe, i know plywood is not the best to use but it was the only option. If someone could answer my questions i would appreciate it :3 i will attach a picture

Piggies generally aren’t jumpers but I would find another way to make that 3 in wall higher as well. Better to be on the safe side.

The minimum recommended size is 120x60cm for a pair of sows and 150x60cm for boars. Your cage unfortunately falls below this. They really need their ‘sleeping’ space to meet these requirements. Second floors don’t count as piggies are ground roaming. I’d find a way to extend their living space by maybe setting up a permanent play area that they have access to 24/7. Space becomes even more important if your piggies are boars. I’d also check the cage recommendations of the rescue you’re getting them from. Will you be getting boars or sows?

They may well chew on the wood. I don’t know how safe that spray stuff you used is. but from the sounds of it they wouldn’t be able to get to it? Plywood is madebu gluing layers together I think. So maybe not the best choice. Other woods you can use are kiln dried aspen and white pine.

Don’t go getting expensive chews from pet shops. Some are also not suitable for piggies. A cardboard box or carrot house is enough of a ‘chew toy’ for them.

I will be getting two sows, they will also have access to my entire room. And i will be sure to extend the wall. The spray stuff is just on the base of the wood and inside of the wall, that’s why i was hoping to cover it.

Make sure you piggy proof your room. Ideally the cage would have met the minimum recommended size but not sure you can do that now. Also....make sure the ramp isn’t too steep, and it has sides.
