Hi all,

I've been giving the pigs their space and letting them get used to me coming and going, not handling them as much as I did initially. Plopper sits still to be picked up, a little struggle as I lift him but nothing much. Adi has to be caught still. Hes mostly ok on my lap but when they see me opening the hutch, they struggle and yesterday Adi jumped out of my arms, thankfully landing inside the hutch.

Anyone elses do this? Scared the wotsits outta me.

It's quite normal for piggies to dislike being picked up and to run away. It's instinctive as they are prey animals. Hopefully with time it will get easier as they get to know you. My girls are a bit more half hearted about running away now but I still have the odd day where they run rings around me (literally).
:)

Our Guinea Pigs jump from our arms sometimes and I believe this is purely down to handling. Guinea Pigs hate moving around, especially when they are being carried, because it makes them feel unsafe. When I am placing mine back in the hutch, there is that tricky moment when you have to hold them but also try and unlock the cage and get it open. I naturally start to move them towards the cage at the same time as opening the door, meaning I am doing so with just the one hand. I believe they must feel insecure being held in one hand and take the risk of jumping into the hutch.

We have 6 Guinea Pigs so I have to keep reshutting the door after each one goes in, so I get this quite a lot.

If I sit next to the cage and have them on my lap then the girls will try and get off to go back in. If I sit on the sofa with them they are much less likely to jump off (although they might have a wander on the sofa) because they can't see the cage.
If they are trying to jump oout of your hands as you put them back in their hutch, then try putting them in backwards (bottom first). :)

All very normal behaviour - most guinea pigs do not like being picked up; it cuts too close to their prey animal instincts.

It might be useful to actually keep his face averted from the hutch when taking him out and put him back in with his bum forward, so he can't suddenly jump.

But we have all been there - piggies can be very fast and wiggly indeed!

my oldest piggie still does this, much to my protesting as I'm scared she will break something, though I'm now use to her i have a routine of makign sure cage door is open and ready before her return and i make sure i have good grip of her :)

Though my partner still giggles when he hears me telling her off, he think I'm mad talking to my piggies :)

I talk to mine all the time, OH thinks its endearing *rolls eyes* its quite funny I guess. He laughs at me because I enjoy cleaning them out, even in the rain x

I must say i also enjoy cleaning my piggies out, i love when i put them back in and the squeek little thankyou's at there nice clean home:) and its good to know I'm not the only one that talks to there piggies:)

contrary to the rest of you, i laugh when my boyfriend talks to them :p i don't like baby talking them, unless i'm calming them down. Chris, however, talks to them in a 'gah-gah' voice. they seem to love him for it...
