Hello, i’m new to this website and i just finished verifying my account. I only came here to see if anyone can answer my questions.

So, I woke up to my guinea pig hooting today at like 4 am, so I was pretty worried. He’s been sneezing for weeks. Today he only sneezed once, and he also coughed. I don’t know if it’s because there might be dust or his cage is the problem. I use that soft wood shaving for his cage. When i took him out of his cage, he was rarely hooting anymore. I want to know if i should take him to the vet and if this is a serious situation. He’s also making a sound but i think he might just be hooting in a different tone. He only did it for a couple seconds, now he stopped. By the way, my guinea pig is 4 years old. (i apologize if some of what i’m saying doesn’t make sense, i’m pretty tired, meaning i don’t pay much attention to correcting my spelling mistakes or anything like that.) I’m not old enough to bring him to the vet myself, so i have to request my mum to bring him to the vet. I asked but since for some reason, going to the vet just for a check up is expensive. Meaning my mum will probably say no unless it’s an actual serious problem.

Hello and welcome - Your guinea pig does need to see a vet - especially as he’s been sneezing for a while - guinea pigs are very good at hiding an illness ( as they are prey animals) -it isn’t possible to diagnose thru the forum or online - you need to explain to your Mum that it is serious and he needs to go asap and that part of owning a pet is that we take on the responsibility of caring and loving and ensuring our pet has the best life possible which includes health care. Is he an only pig ?
Good luck and show your Mum my comment if she is unsure

Your piggy should be seen by a vet if this is a continuing issue.
Is there is hay dust irritation occurring then a sneeze should clear it. However as the issue has been going on for some time and given a URI is a serious issue then any breathing issue which goes on for longer than a few hours needs to be checked out.

Please switch from the routine weekly weight checks and instead weigh him daily while there are health concerns and step in with syringe feeding if there is any weight loss.

I agree - a vet trip will be worthwhile. A respiratory infection is something which can be treated with antibiotics. Vets can also prescribe anti-inflammatory and pain relief for him. In the UK it is a product called metacam (or loxicom). They don't get over these lung infections on their own. Piggies also don't get 'a cold' like people do - these lung symptoms, maybe with wet or running nose/eyes - are not viral and need treatment. Good luck little piggy x

I’ve actually kept him outside his cage all day. He’s been doing pretty well but i’ve obviously still been concerned because he hasn’t been checked up yet. I will post if i was able to take him to the vet. By the way, thank you guys for letting me know <33! I’m also paying attention to him. When i had to go to school, since my mum didn’t work today, I asked my Mum if she could maybe check up on him every once in a while. My mum said he was doing fine and wasn’t hooting or anything which might be good. Though i’ll still take him to the vet just in case asap.
