Hi all :(
If you’ve read my threads you’ll know about my precious Mare, 22yo Lucy. I’ve had her for about 15 years, she moved to Australia with me a few years ago. She’s my heart and soul.
There was a huge storm on Friday night, right above our house, the thunder was extremely loud and lighting extremely close by. Yesterday I went out to check the horses and Lucy wouldn’t come over for food, which is extremely unlike her. She’s a walking vacuum who never turns down food.

I knew something was up as she was holding her rear leg strangely. I went to retrieve her and she can hardly walk and she was shaking in pain.
Upon investigation with me and her Chiropractor we can see Lucy has a swollen hock, (back knee).
I’ve confined her in the yard and giving her bute (pain meds) twice a day. She will only shuffle around and eat hay put in front of her. Other than that she’s not moving.
I’m so worried, I don’t know the extent of the damage yet, but considering she’s so reluctant to move I’m very concerned. But she can weight bare if I make her move, so hopefully that’s one thing at least.
I’ll have the vet for x-rays on Monday.
There is currently another storm starting now so I really hope she doesn’t get stressed and attempt to move around too much.

Fingers, paws and hooves crossed it’s nothing too serious 😭

Poor Lucy! Hopefully, if she can still weight bear then that's a good sign and she just needs time to heal. Can you play classical music to help calm the animals before and during storms ? I know animals can feel the storms as well as hear them but it might help. Keeping fingers and paws crossed that Lucy makes a full recovery x

Thank you, I hope so too.
The storms here are extremely loud, nothing like when i lived in England. The whole house shakes! So music wouldn’t be heard but thanks for the suggestion :)

Oh no dear Lucy ….i hope she will be ok and that this storm doesn’t upset her
It’s good she’s still eating …sending love to you all and special healing vibes to Lucy ❤️

HUGS

I am so very sorry. More thunderstorms won't help.

PS: I've grown up in Switzerland with lots more thunderstorms during the summer months and with a small transformer station for the village quarter only a few yards from the house so we had plenty of instant hits where lightning and thunder happen at once. It is really loud and pretty scary. Especially when it wakes you from deep sleep. Only that I have always felt safe because of that station; even if it was knocking out the electricity regularly.

Oh she is gorgeous 😍 I hope her injury heals soon and that she is calm and sensible during the storm.

Hopefully as she is confined to the yard she'll feel a bit safer. That injury she's got does look very painful. As she's still eating that's a good sign. Hope the X-ray shows nothing too bad. She is one beautiful pony.

Oh no! That’s a big hock. Especially accompanied by lameness that bute isn’t touching.

Can you have her scanned? In case it’s soft tissue damage too?

Definitely icing/cold hosing for the inflammation before it encourages more damage. Those cool boots can be good, but I tend to find ice and a hock bandage does equally as well

Hope it’s nothing too nasty 🤞🏻 sending love 💕
Keep us posted 🤞🏻

Try not to worry too much until investigations have been done (easier said than done though) Sending loads of healing vibes Lucy's way ❤️ she is beautiful.
Take care of yourselves x

Thank you for suggestions, I’ll definitely talk to the vet today about a scan, I recon they will x-ray first. Can they scan remotely? Or would it have to be done at a vet clinic?
She was more willing to walk around yesterday evening, guess it’s the bute kicking in but made me feel a little better. Though still very sore and lame of course. She’s also laid down a couple of times and managed to get up okay.

Good signs being able to get up and down.
They can remote ultrasound. Tends to give a better picture that X-ray alone as you can see both bone and soft tissue at the same time. Might save you the cost of doing both?

Remember she will need to be off the bute for a good few days before a vet check/lameness work up, or it won’t give the vet a clear picture of severity.

So pleased she has improved a bit 💕
