Hello, i am very worried about my gp because when i bought a pair, they told me they were both males, thing that was not true, its been a year now since i have them and now there are 2 babies, one is about 6 months and the other just one month old, the problem is that my kids dont want to give away any of them cause they are really endeared with them...now daddy gumer had a fight with his first son junior, i please need to know what to do, i built a very nice 2 floor wooden home for them but now i had to take away the female til i know whats next...I will really appreciate your help! Thanks so much!

Hi

You are definitely right in taking away the female. Its likely that she is pregnant again though, as they can get pregnant very soon after giving birth. Is the youngest baby definitely a male too?

Did the fight between father and son draw blood? If not, you can try to rebond them. Have you tried giving them a bath together, this can help with bonding. Male guinea pigs usually live together best as a pair, so you might find it difficult to have 3 males living together. Try to keep the female far away from them, as her smell will make them more likely to fight. If they draw blood then you need to seperate them.

If you can't rebond the father and oldest son, then maybe you could get the father neutered, and after 4-6 weeks he could live with the female - As long as she hasn't had babies by then (pregnancy takes 10 weeks). Do you know of a good guinea pig vet?

If you don't have the space for all these guinea pigs, you might have to consider finding a local animal rescue. I hope you manage to find a solution. Good luck, and let us know what happens!

xx

Thanks Rosie!

Well yes there was a little blood in Daddy Gumer´s upper lip, and last nite i tried to put them together and both started to make sounds with their teeth, sounds to me like they were both mad again, i will try to make some outdoor activities with them, probably garden or as you said a bath together, they have have just one fight i assume, one time that junior had his eye like with catarat and i treated it with some medicine and everything went fine for a long time but now i guess jr was the winner in the fight. Its very hard to me imagine that i have to rehome them, (specially my kids) but tell me, if i get to fix the mom instead? would that help too? but still would be 3 males? the youngest I'm not sure yet if is a she or he, most vets around here are * know dogs and cats but i will have to look for one to neuter any of them...

It is far easier and cheaper to neuter a male than spay a female (which should only happen for medical reasons, as it is a major operation).

There is a good thread at the top of this section about boar behaviour; so you know the danger signs and when it is just posing.

For sexing the baby: http://www.guinealynx.info/sexing_pups.html

Your 5 month old boy is just hitting the hormones, which is normal for his age - he wants to be biggest boy around... I can recommend to bathe your two boys together; removing the testosterone smell from them works quite well!

Make sure that you keep mummy apart; if your baby turns out to be another male, he needs to be removed from mummy, as he can start fathering babies from week three onwards.

If you're not sure about the sex of the youngest you need to separate them now. She could get pregnant at 4 weeks.
I wouldn't recommend spaying a female, its more dangerous than castrating a male, although both carry risk.
If you don't know of a good vet then it would be even worrying, do you have a small animal shelter nearby - could you ask them which vet they use.

If the boys have fallen out for good (and it sounds like they have...) spaying/neutering will do nothing to help them get along.

Even after these operations the boys will still remember that they are enemies. In this case if you want to keep them all I think the only options are to;

If 1 month old baby is a girl
a) Keep boys separate and mum with baby
b) neuter both boys and have them with a girl each.

If 1 month old baby is a boy
c)neuter the Dad to live with the Mum and have the 2 babies together. This should be ok for a few months - you'd have to hope they get along when they grow up too!

Maybe someone else will have a better suggestion, but from my experience with boys this is really the only option once they have been around girls - if they are kept separate from girls from the very begining boys normally make good friends (so there may be hope for the littlest one).

Hope this helps.

I'm happy for your comments!

I really appreciate your help! I will bathe all 4 guinea pigs tomorrow, first the 2 fighters and then the youngest baby with mum, and see how it works, I will be traveling for a month but hubby will take care of them, I'm sorry this had to happen 5 days before i travel!) I still have time to see if they get along well after tomorrow, or better leave them separated while i come back... another question, is it normal that daddy gumer salivates when he´s doing this teething chatter? hope it is...I´ll keep * informed! by the way cute GP s you all have! I´ll upload more pics when i find out how to, still finding out how this works, but for now i see nice human feelings around here...xx>>>

sorry! i had to say this, fights betweeen my GP, sounds funny!

The salivating doesn't sound normal - he may have a tooth problem. Have you got a vet that can check his BACK teeth?

What gender is baby? Could you find that out with the pictures I gave you the link to?
