Ive been looking into changing my bedding for my piggies, have a couple of reasons why,

firstly for vet bed I'm struggling to get the hay out of it and also after a couple of washes i can still smell uwee..

fleece is awlful to remove the hay also, I'm worried incase i clog up my washing machine..

so at the moment they just have newspaper down... (they live in doors)

Ive been looking at alternatives....

slightly confused would for example wilkinsons wood shavings/sawdust for little animals be ok?

I have also been looking at megazorb but I'm not sure as to where you can buy it from? Any ideas or stockists?

please help, or will they be ok living on newspaper? i put hay out for them to eat etc just dont want it as bedding..
so confused any ideas will be extremly gratefull thanks xx

Hello there. Wood shavings is really not good for them as it can make them sneeze and when they get older it is difficult for them to walk on. Newspaper is not very snuggly and comfortable for them. The best thing really is fleece. Why not have the hay just in one area on newspaper and then have fleece all around the rest of your piggies home? That is what I do. If you shake the fleece I find the hay falls off. Ah, just thought, you are using good quality Timothy hay? That makes less mess then the cheaper ones.

I hope this is of some help.

ahh thanks il give the timothy hay a go, ive not heard of this before i just got some cheap dust free hay, where do you get your timothy hay from? xx

The best hay is Timothy hay. The cheaper ones really are not up to standard. Is there anything else you would like to know as you seem new to it all. :)

Not necessarily true. It affects guinea pigs with allergies, yes, but shavings (not sawdust) are a viable bedding for guinea pigs. My pigs have been bedded on dust-extracted shavings for the last 18 years and we've never had a problem with it.

From what you've said OP; I'm assuming your pigs are kept indoors. Some people can't tolerate the smell of shavings so that's something you should look into if you've not used it before! If you want to use it it would be worth trying it in part of your cage first to test your piggies on it. :)

However, if you're not comfortable with using shavings then something like megazorb would be an option for you if you're not happy with vetbed/fleece. You would need to find a farm shop/equine shop to get this as it is a horse bedding. We order it in from the local farm shop for our longer haired guinea pigs. It's about £8 for a large sack. Once the bag has aired it also doesn't smell much, so it won't affect your home. :)

yeh these two are my first piggies, and one has ringworm 8... she is resonding well to treatment thank god but its been stressfull lol-especiaally as i have to treat her twice a day, shes gonna hate me at the end of it as i have to hold her down and shes trying to bite a wriggle free lol..

All my five have sneezed with wood shavings so I thought all piggies did. ")

Not technically true, my guineas have lived on bale farm hay all their life and have no health issues from this. Timothy hay can in fact be quite rich depending on when the grass has been cut.

I personally used diced newspaper, same bedding as my horse has, it is dust free and doesn't make too much mess, and is incredibly absorbant.

Wood shavings are very sneeze making, and messy, I was really pleased when I made the change.

Ooh, that sounds interesting; which bedding is it? Similarly do you know of any other horsey beddings that would be good for piggies? I'm looking for something more cost efficient for lining the bottom of a shed than shavings; and preferably a bit more absorbant too! :)

I find shavings good for hutches/cages, but I'm not so sure they'd be good for a whole shed... and 15 piggies on it. >_<
