hi guys, so the past couple days syd has been waking up with crustys on her eyelashes, milky eyes happening a couple times a day, she’s breathing faster and weirdly has more energy. i’m pretty nervous and was wondering if i should take her to the emergency room tonight

Id say if you have access to an exotic ER, you should go. If it's an URI you could get started on abx. The crusty eyes with the milky stuff wouldn't worry me too much, but when you add a breathing issue, Id say go 💕 Good luck and hope it's all ok!

Hi!

What kind of crusts on the eyes are you talking about?
- milk-white ones (i.e. spilled or not reabsorbed eye cleaning fluid)
- transparent crusts (i.e. dried tear fluid, which in guinea pigs does indicate an irritation or injury in the eye)
- greyish gunk (i.e. ulceration/infection of the eye surface after a scratch or because of a hay poke)
- yellow/green/orangey thick mucussy crusts that can glue eyes together (i.e. sign of an untreated upper respiratory tract infection)

It is normal for piggies to produce the milky-white eye cleaning fluid a few times a day as they do not squint with the eyelids to wash the eyes with clear tear fluid.

I cannot comment further without more background information and no other access to your guinea pig than just your perception.
However, if you have serious concerns, please see a vet if in doubt. Especially with breathing.

If her breathing seems 'off' then I would definitely take her to see a vet.
Remember you know your own piggy best and your gut instinct is usually right.
