I got a guinea pig 9 days ago. She is acting normal, but today suddenly this lump started to grow under her chin. It doesn't bother her when I touch it. What could it be?

It looks like it could be an abscess, it's definitely worth a vet visit I'm afraid.

Where did you get her from? Most pet shops will cover any vet fees if it's something she had already. Has she got a cagemate?

And welcome to the forum btw :)

Thanks! I got her from Petsmart and she is the only one in the cage. Is she going to die?

No I don't think she'll die, but she'll need it to be sorted or she may stop eating as it's likely to be painful.

Have you got any piggy savvy vets near you? Sadly not all vets are good with pigs so it's worth looking around.

I'd also recommend getting her a friend at some point as piggies need to be in pairs or more :) Pet shops are pretty useless at getting genders right unfortunately so you do have to be a bit careful, but it's definitely worth it! :)

Okay thanks. She's been eating and drinking normal. I've never had a guinea pig but my 10 year old dog just died and my parents told me they don't want another dog but I could get a small sized pet so I picked her. I don't know how to tell if a vet is good for guinea pigs because I've only ever been to a vet for a dog. I really want to get another guinea pig but my parents will only let me get one new pet and the pet store told me she would be good on her own. Is that not true?

I'm sorry i am not sure what this is,it could be different things, which would require different treatments.i would advise you take your piggie to a vet.then the correct diagnosis can be obtained.:)

Hi and welcome!

Please see a vet for any lump and any bald area where there should be none!

As it is so close after purchase, you can reclaim any vet cost from your pet shop if you present the vet bill together with the sales receipt.

Ps: We do our best to answer any thread in this section as promptly as we can, considering that we are all forum members and unpaid member mods, but you can help us a lot by putting your problem in the title, so any members with experience in this area are going to have a look. Thank you!

Thanks! Do you think she is going to die from this?

Sadly not, guinea pigs are herd animals so need at least one friend of the same gender (or neutered of the opposite) in order to live a happy life. To be honest with you, 1 more pig doesn't make a lot of difference. 2 are just as easy to look after as 1 (and I have 5!). 2 guinea pigs basically equal one pet really.

What sort of cage did the pet shop sell you? It sounds like they haven't been honest with you (unfortunately pet shops rarely are, even in the UK) and they may have sold you a cage that's too small. The minimum I'd recommend is a 4 foot by 2 foot for girls.

I'll tag @Wiebke as I believe she may have a list of recommended vets for the US. Where abouts are you located? You can always put your state on your profile which will make it easier for us to help you in the future :)

Thanks! Do you think she is going to die from this?

No. Especially not if you have her seen promptly during regular opening hours, ideally tomorrow. if you wait too long, then it can become problem.

My cage is 24 by 30 inches and it has a ramp and ledge, but she won't use the ramp. Whenever I'm home I have in out of her cage and on my bed with me or in my lap. I am located in Baton Rouge Louisiana. Thanks so much! I know you said that they are not always right with the genders and I was wondering if you know how to check if zoey really is a girl?

No, guinea pigs are ground roaming social group animals and are not wired to be on their own.

Guinea Pig Facts - A Short Overview

We have got lots of information for new owners via this link here to help them to a smooth start, including links to recommended piggy savvy vets in several countries. You may find it very helpful as the pet shop doesn;t seem to have a clue about the animals they sell - sadly not unusual for pet shops! :(

I am very sorry, but that cage is in fact small even for a hamster! There is a cage size guide in our new owners guide. ;)

You can post a picture of the genitals in our pregnancy and sexing section, which is specially monitored by some experienced people. A link to a sexing page with lots of pictures is also provided in our new owners guide collection. We really have tried our best to put everything in there that you need when you start out! ;)
You may need to wait until tomorrow for more qualified answers as it is already well after midnight here in the UK.

How does this happen? This morning it wasn't there and then it just suddenly appeared

Yes, they can come up very quickly. It could be an abscess, in which case you need antibiotic. The sooner you have it seen and start treatment, the better!

Thanks!

Have you got her to a vet yet or made an appointment?

A cage of 120cm long will be good for two piggies

I think 47 inches equates to 120cm so that cage is a good size for two piggies

I have an appointment for her tomorrow. How do I pick a good friend for her. I don't want to accidentally pick one she hates

Idk if this is normal but also my guinea pig runs in circles and starts jumping
Yep that is normal. Running is called zoomies and the jumping is called popcorning it means you have a happy piggy! She will be even happier when you get her a friend! Before you do, you need to read this (I know it's a lot of reading)

Behaviour, Bonding & Bereavement Guides

I think u should definitely take her to the vets because you wouldn't want to risk a piggie getting ill
