Hi Everyone,

I convert my piggies home to fleece last night.

Using -

Puppy liner at the bottom of their house (which is a double ferplast 120)
Mattress cover
Fleece.

I came home from work this evening and my house STINKS :aLJFBQ00151070111C:

The fleece was only wet in parts, the mattress cover underneath was soaked and the puppy pads only just wet.

I did wash the fleece three last before I used it.

What am I doing worng?

I have now had to leave their home with just puppy pads and a fleece. I don't as yet have anymore mattress covers :(

Please HELP me. I really want to convert to fleece, but I can not put up with a stinky house.

Thank you
A very unhappy Anj 8... x

Is the matress protector 100% cotton topped?

Fleece stinks! We use it for our blind girl but I hate it and think it stinks too.

Oh dear. I have not found this. I use a layer of towels and two layers of fleece and it is fine.

I have found that fleece stinks too. I tried it as a whole flooring when I first found this website but got sick of poo being everywhere. Now I have half and half and just use a shower curtain and a folded fleece, I change it every three days.

Not sure it will stay tho, I hate the poo! may switch to newspaper and change more.

xx

Hi Connie,

The package says -

Fabric & Filling - 100% Polyester
Bakc & Skirt - 100% polypropylene

I have managed to find 100% cotton ones yet.

Is what I have done at present ok -

This being puppy pads and just the fleece?

Thank you
Anj. xx

puppy pads and fleece you may even find is better, because if its not 100% cotton topped (the wadding in the middle should be polyester, but not the fabric covering) It wont absorb the wee propperly. That may be your problem?

Tescos do a standard matress topper that is 100% cotton topped, for about £9.50 for a double, but you would probably only need a single :)

Puppy pads and fleece should work ok. You can just use newspaper and fleece but might need to change it more often.

I have washable incontinence pads under fleece.

I think this cotton topped mattress topper has been recommended before.

With fleece, you will need to do once or twice daily poop scoops in order to keep smell to a minimum.

I also recommend that you have an a hay pit or litter tray filled with hay. Pigs will often do the majority of their pees in a hay area.

I found that when they were in a cage use to be cleaning them out every other day as the smell was too much, now there in a c&c cage and its very big over two floors, it doesn't smell as much as there is more of an area and the wee is drying out where as in the smaller cages it was getting soaked and no time to dry out . I have also put a litter tray on each level and now I clean the poops up daily and clean them out every 5 or 6 days.

When mine were on fleece (they're back onto hay, but that was down to me being fed up cleaning up poos and doing washing all the time), but they didn't smell when they were on fleece.

I had them on newspaper, vet bed and then fleece on top.

When I had sows before I found they were a lot less smelly on fleece. It does really help to have a big litterbox with hay and their food bowl in, but I couldn't keep up with the washing myself. It was ruining my washing machine too. My boys love the comfort of fleece, so now just have it in their small upstairs area. Less washing for me :)

The thought of having animals in the house that would wee and poo on fleece is :)>>> in my eyes. Before you all scream and shout, that is my opinion and I am allowed it :(|) I am not suprised your house pongs :)>>> Good luck finding a solution :))

Thank you ALL so very much for your replies :)

I will have a look in tesco for a mattress cover Connie. But for now stay with the puppy pads & fleece.

I dont mind poo picking, I use to poo pick the horse paddock so piggy poo is nothing to me. It is the stink I can't put up with.

My piggies are both boys (half brothers), by the way so I'm not sure if this makes a difference.

Boys do smell abit more, but they should smell... piggy-ey, not smell of wee. :) Also, i hate to say it, but the bigger the cage the less smell. :)

I changed to fleece last Saturday. Dry Nights pad, then a towel then fleece. I cleaned them out last night and at that point they still weren't smelling. Have 2 pigs in the hutch. It's mysterious that yours smell so quickly.

The piggies home is a double (top and bottom) ferplast 120 cage,

Size around - L118 x W58.5 x H51.5cm.

I think it is one that is used a lot for piggies.

Bill & Ted's home.

The hay cover is no longer in there and it's now on a proper stand.

Why dont you try putting towels down and then two layers of fleece? That is what I do.

I do a thick layer of news paper, then one layer of towels (two large ones) then a 150cm fleece folded in half so its double thickness. I find when I change them the fleece is always dry, the towels have damp spots at either end (hay rack and bottle at one end and food bowls at the other you see) but mainly dry and the news paper is has lots of soggy spots where its absorbed the pee but has got to the point where it can take no more lol, hence clean out day. Just wanted to share what works for me too.

I've not had problems with Artie as he never seems to wee much! I use a half and half set up for him as he seems to like it. Half his cage is newspaper and hay, other half is just fleece, he doesn't seem to need towels/liners. I could get away with a weekly clean but do a twice weekly one and do poop check spot cleans twice a day.
Freddie my previous guinea was different - he wet everywhere - his cosy was soaked in a day and smelt. He was changed daily. I know Melvin & Parsnip would be the same so they are on newspaper & hay and seem happy.

I wash all fleece 3 times before use and use Eco type washing liquid or coop one. I line or radiator dry never tumble dry.

Hope you can stick with fleece, if not megazorb is a good bedding.

It could be your fleece I use polar fleece and some blankets, polar fleece imo works the best and some fleece blankets ( like primark) smell straight away dunelm blankets are good tho

I use one layer of fleece with towel, it's all a case of trial and error really, i found that at first it stunk alot more, but it got better, i tried things like newspaper and things underneath but it doesn't make much difference,
In my old shop bought cage, that was liberta 100, stunk, to the point my boyfriends mum wanted to kick the piggies out, but i changed to my C&C and now they get to 3 days and don''t smell at all, it's great.

Sorry! I really wasnt implying your cage was too small! I'm very sorry if it seemed that way! Its a lovely sized cage for two boys, I just ment that does make a difference. :) I had a cage about this size of one floor of your cage for my boys to start with, that needed changing aprox every 2-3 days, since extending, I have had to clean them out less. However, it definatly shouldnt be smelling after only a day.

See how you go with puppy pads, it may have just been the liner not actually absorbing any off the pee :)

Ive used fleece for years and it doesnt smell too bad. I use 2 towels under 1 fleece and it stay smell free for about 3-4 days

What i have found with my herd is that my fleece can go a little while without smelling as they have a 'hay box'. This is an old bottom to a ferplast 80 cage which i fill with hay, hay racks and their water bottles. They tend to use this as a toileting area, (mostly wees - poops go everywhere) also any water spilt can go into the box too. I change this every 2-3 days and they dont smell at all. And that 9 piggies in my C&C house. I know it may not be possible but maybe a hay area may help, although I'm not sure how you would this with a double 120.

I use newspaper 2 or 3 layers then in their sleep part i use lots of shredded paper for them. I change them every day washing the cage out before redoing paper.

Uhm, I never cared for fleece tbh, looks lovely but converted to vet bed which is brilliant stuff x)
Have to agree with Abi nurse, hay areas (bigger the better) work well as the piggies do wee and poop in them.
I can leave vet bed in the pens for 5-7 days for my pairs of piggies and change the groups every 4-5 days but fleece needed changing almost daily or became whiffy :(

Connie, It's ok, I didn't think you were saying their cage was too small at all. Although all my previous piggies have been girls, and I know boys should have a bigger area. Their outdoor cage is much bigger, it's again a double cage, 5ft long by 2ft wide it's a Rose Cottage cage from Pets at home.

I have now purchased a mattress cover which has a -

100% cotton cover
100% Polypropylene filling, backing & skirt

I am hoping this will work better.

I have alson purchased some huggies, dry nites bed mats size 145cm x 80cm 7 in a pack for £2.87.

So I'm going back too -

Puppy liners / bed mats on the bottom of the cage
Cotton mattress cover in the middle
fleece on top

In one corner I have a guinea pig litter tray, at present it's being used as a hay tray, but I suspect it may end up being used as the litter tray!.

Please let me know what you think :)

Many thanks
Anj. xx

Can I offer a tip...")
