I found my guinea pig lying down on his side and he won't move, he's still breathing and twitches now and again, but he won't get up, or eat, he took a bite of his carrot but half of it just sat in his mouth, please help me. My parents are out for the night, it's the middle of the night, the vet is closed and the nearest emergency vet is almost an hour away please please help me

please help me, i feel sick, i've tried giving him more veg but he just moves his mouth like he's going to eat it but it's like he doesn't have enough strength. He's still passing poos and those look fine, if I try to sit him upright, he just falls onto his left side please please help me

I'm not very experienced with g pigs yet but hopefully someone will come onto this thread soon who can offer advise.
I wouldnt offer anymore food just now incase he cant swallow properly and chokes.

Hope someone can help you soon.xx

I am pretty sure that this happened to my piggie, copper. she was laying stiff on her side and wasn't moving. sadly, she didn't make it through. have you called your parents?

I have called them, but the drive is a long one and I'm terrified that by the time they make it here he won't make it. He's still the same, he still moves the tiniest bit now and then, he's still breathing but he just so limp and unresponsive for the most part, I feel so helpless

So far he's still just lying still, he moves his front paws sometimes, I've syringe fed him some mushed up pellets, but he's just so limp, hopefully he won't deteriorate further :(

It sounds like he had a stroke. :(

Please keep him quiet and comfortable. You can gently syringe a bit of hand warm water, but not more than 0,1 ml in one go, as he may not be able to swallow and you do not want to risk things going down the wrong way.

If he picks up again, then you can start offering him handwarm mushed up pellets and water, little but often in very small bits. Always wait until he has swallowed the previous portion before giving more.
Complete Syringe Feeding Guide

It can well be that he won't recover; I am sorry to say. Please do not force anything down him that he cannot process if his body has started to close down. Just be there with him and make sure that he is not cold. It is very likely that a vet cannot do anything, either, so please don't fret over that point. It is very hard when you are confronted with a guinea pig that might be dying; even more so when it is the first time and you are alone!

BIG HUGS

I'm so sorry he is poorly, try and get mushed up pellets and syringe feed as much water as your piggie can manage, which may not be much. you are doing all you can.just keep him comfortable ,until your parents are home, and get him to the vet as soon as possible.do not blame yourself ,you are doing very well.Hope he gets well.keep us updated if you can..x

I am sorry, good advice from Wiebke above. Just make sure he is able to swallow. All you can do is keep him warm and get him to the vet as soon as you can. I know it is hard, but you are there with him. It is tea time here in the UK so people are around to offer support and talk to if you need it.

Thank you everyone, I've wrapped him up a little to keep him warm, I don't think he's swallowing too well, or rather he's swallowing very slowly so I'm not giving him much, he's still hanging in there but it doesn't look good :( thank you again for all the advice and support, makes it that tiny bit easier when you don't feel so alone x

I am sorry, you are doing what you can till your parents get home. I know it is tough and have been through similar. He will be comforted knowing you are around.

My parents got home and we rushed to the vets but as soon as we got there, he just stopped breathing. I wish there was something I could have done to keep him going even for a little longer and maybe the vet could have done something, but he already was such a trooper and I hope that there are plenty of carrots across rainbow bridge. Thanks again everyone, it means the world knowing that there are people who understand x

You definitely did everything you could to keep him comfortable and happy, he appreciate that more than you could ever know.
Sleep tight little man.
Hugs to you.Xx:hug:
P.S. Of course there are millions of carrots over the rainbow bridge.
