So my year old agouti boy, churro, had gotten lumpectomy surgery on wednesday (four days ago) and he is currently taking metacam and baytril. I had gotten a CBD pen in the mail (photo attatched) today so I had wanted to try it (I heard that it helps really well with pain and stress, Saskia from LAGPR made me really want to try it)

So I rubbed a small amount into his ears, and now he is going crazy. He is constantly running around and jumping into everything, I can’t even hold him for 10 seconds without him trying to jump out of my arms. He is usually always calm and isn’t very active (he used to be active when his friend Stripe had been alive. i was trying to get him a new friend but ever since he had passed away, churro developed and abscess so i couldnt let him be nearby other pigs). This is so abnormal for him and I'm really worried. It seems like his heartrate has shot way up and hes acting as if hes “high”. Could anyone let me know why hes acting like this? Ive never used cbd on any of my pigs before, i thought that the cbd would help him calm down :( does anyone know how long this will last for? its 4 am and i wanted to give his medicine now but ive been up for 40 minutes watching him run around like crazy.

thank you if anyone could help! i need to calm down haha I'm shaking a lot. I dont know if I'm allowed to show his surgery stitches but here is also a photo of what now his side looks like

Has your vet agreed for you to use this?
i hadnt asked :( i definitely will in the future but i had assumed it would work as just a pain killer to calm him down. i saw a lot of information about how it can help with inflammation and pain and also stress which i thought could help him at the moment (since he doesnt like getting picked up from his cage)

I'm going to call my vet in the morning to ask her about it. i put him back into his cage and now he is acting much more calm, hes currently munching down on hay and is laying down. I'm glad he isnt running around like crazy anymore, i think it might of been that he was out of his cage and being around my other guinea pigs (them being inside their cage) got him excited. ill definitely check in with my vet tomorrow and ask about it

Please NEVER give extra treatments to any animal, that your vet is not aware of! A lot of veterinary medicines can interact badly with other treatments. The vet will ensure that everything they prescribe, will work well together. This is potentially very dangerous and you need to speak to your vet about this, as soon as possible.

We cannot advocate the use of CBD oil or any indeed treatment without advice and recommendation of a vet.

The Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD), part of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, said: 'There are currently no CBD-based products that have been granted a UK veterinary marketing authorisation”. The British Veterinary Association position is that there is a lack of sufficient robust evidence to demonstrate health benefits and safety of use in pets.

Please call your vet as an emergency to discuss. And be honest about what you have done so that they can advise you in the best steps to take.

And finally, please be aware that just because something appears on the Internet does not mean that it is safe.

Given that you are describing a severe response I actually think you need to call the out of hours vet for advice.

Keep a close eye on your piggy and unless things settle quickly, you will need to seek the advice of an out of hours vet. A vet is the best person to advise you about your guinea pig, so please don't regard treatment options that you see on the internet, as being safe and appropriate.

I just called my emergency vet and she had told that cbd can be unpredictable which is why they usually dont prescribe it. she told me as long as no symptoms show up of sickness he should be fine, but if anything does show up ill take him to the emergency vet. churro is doing much better now since i think the cbd wore off on him. hes laying down and i gave him some veggies and hes eating them normally. ill still call and ask my vet again about it in the morning since she knows my guinea pig the best. thank you for your help, this really helped calm me down.
