George has just pulled his nail off because he was so excited for food & caught it on the bars. It's really bleeding & the nail seems to be hanging off - is there anything I can do?

I have had a few accidents cutting my lots nails. The only things i can suggest is keeping the toe tightly covered over and checking regularly to see if the bleeding has stopped. I also remember reading that putting some white pepper on the cut can help stop the bleeding. Never tried this myself as no matter how badly I think the cut nail is, it usually stops bleeding eventlally. putting the cut into cold water or ice may help as well. Dont panic! I have done this many times and I always seem more traumatised that the poor piggy. hope you wee one is okay

There will be plenty of other usesfull tips to follow I'm sure

All I can suggest is you apply pressure and wait for the bleeding to stop. I have a piggy who once had a very bad bleed from her foot, to the point where I was scared she was bleeding to death, but I just wrapped a clean teatowel around her foot and applied pressure to where it was bleeding from and waited. It took nearly an hour to stop!

What's happening now?

Firstly, do not panic, your pig will not bleed to death. Apply gentle pressure to the area. I would be most surprised if it is still bleeding by the time you read this!
If the nail is hanging off then cut it at the point where it is hanging off the toe.
A little blood goes a long way.

i've heard using cornstarch from the kitchen helps clog the area to help it stop....kinda like the stiptic powder a vet would use. Anyone else have thoughts on this?
Hope your sweetie is ok soon

i was wondering if you put a little tiny bit of vasiline like they do boxers over cuts dont know if this will harm piggie:...

i have also heard cornstarch works great and is commonly used when nails are cut to short,it apparently stops bleeding quickly xx

Thanks everyone for your replies. I couldn't stem the bleeding & panicked so I took him to the emergency vets. They removed the nail & bathed his foot & after a while it did stop bleeding. He is fine this morning. I'm such a worrier mallethead

I've this happen twice, and I panicked as well first time round - the bleeding looks worse than it actually is.

This happened to my rabbit when we took him to the vets for an injection, and I opened his carry-case lid when it was on the vets table, he jumped on me, then landed in the corner of him room, and whilst trying to run off, he ripped his nail off. The bleeding stopped more or less straight away.

Hope he is all better now!

xx

So glad all is ok now Suzanne! One of my past pigs did a similar thing - jumped over his commercial cage and ripped his nail off. We used finely ground coffee grounds to stop the bleeding, but cornstarch/flour and styptic powder can both work well.

Thanks everyone :)
It obviously hasn't affected George at all - he did the same this morning & tried to climb over the C&C for his veg mallethead
The vets did give me a pen type thing that I think was silver nitrate in case it started bleeding again - has anyone ever used this?

Sounds like a stypic pencil. I've just bought one actually, will see if it is any use when I do nails later this week. Out of 140 nails, I almost always catch at least one.

I'm so glad the vets were able to stop the bleeding on little George's paw :(
Heaps of healing wheeeeeeeeeeks from the girls xoxoxoxoxoxo
and HUGE HUGS from me to you, i know how you felt love :{ xx>>>xx>>>

I wonder how many wild guinea pigs bleed to death from a torn mail?
I can understand panic and alarm if an artery or vein is cut but the blood supply to a nail.....
My reaction to some of the above posts is how can such a minor problem turn into such a melodrama? Any newcomer reading all of this will be put off from ever attempting nail-trimmimg.
Simple first aid...pressure is all that is needed.
I have yet to encounter a haemophiliac guinea pig, that would be interesting.

I think I did over react - I always do when it comes to the sight of blood mallethead

I don't mind the sight of blood unless it is mine then I tend to go horizontal!!
