Since discovering that one of my boars was a sow :{ I have separated them. Spike has the top two floors of the cage and Cornelius has the bottom one (he is the littlest and the messiest). They are separated by a grid so that they can still talk to each other should they want to. Of course, they don't because discovering that she is a girl has not made Spike like Corny (Cornelius Fudge's nickname) any more than she did before. In fact, when I now get them out for lap time together she complains and head butts him to make him go away like she really hates him.

He is due for his 'little op' on Friday so has another six weeks away from her and I am concerned that she is becoming even less enamoured of him now that she has managed to get rid of him! Does this mean that they are simply not compatible in (guinea pig) love or is there hope for them?

Also, Spike seems to have gone off being handled and complains when I have her on my lap. Is she distressed that I have taken away her boyfriend?

It probably just means that Spike is not in season (you have to have her on 10 week pregnancy watch after separation anyway) and has no use for Corny. There is also an element of dominance/jealousy in there.

Should I continue to do a shared lap time? I was worried that they might 'forget' each other if they were never together and need re-introducing or is this not an issue here?

I wouldn't do shared lap time until he is healed from his op, by which time you will probably know whether Spike is pregnant (from the weight gain over the next 6 weeks).

Sorry if I have missed it - are they in a hutch, seperated by the upstairs/downstairs, or in a C&C? If in a C&C, I would try to get them next to each other. When I seperated Mabelle from Sasha after his op, I had them side by side in a Savic Park 6 run, with an extra panel down the middle so they could still see each other.

They are in a three storey 120 cm Baffy Essegi indoor cage. I have taken off the bottom ramp and covered the hole with a C & C grid. I blocked it off with something solid at first but she seemed miserable and when I put a grid there he came up the ramp (I had not removed it at that stage) and she came to the hole and they squeaked once before going off and ignoring each other again but she did seem happier (could just be my imagination).

He seems frightened of her and goes away when she head butts him. In fact he does not seem to want to go any where near her on my lap.

My Sasha used to kick Mabelle in the head when she wasn't in season, or wee in his face! I would think it is just that, not that they don't get on. None of my piggies are snuggley with each other. I would say she isn't in season, so he isn't 'interested' in her.

She could just be annoyed by him, because maybe he kept trying to mount her, and she wasn't in season and got annoyed by him.

I know with rabbits that when they are pregnant they get moody, and don't want anything to do with boy rabbits. But I've never heard of that with guinea pigs, so not saying it's a sign she's pregnant, but does anyone know if that applies to piggies too?

It sounds like she might still want his company, since she seemed happy to see him again. I wouldn't give up hope of them ever liking each other, cos some guinea pigs act like they don't get on too well but they still secretly like each other :)

LOL I love it! I did not realise that guinea pigs were so complicated! :)):))

:) Like my two girls, they boss each other around and don't ever act very friendly to each other, but I know they'd be lost without each other. :)

I'm sure they will be fine once your male has had his op and they will be happily in love! x) I thought my 2 rabbits were boys but turned out one was female! :{ My female really didn't like her brother as he was constantly chasing her! rolleyes So we had him neutered (she is also spayed) Thankfully no babies! :) And they are happily in love, I think she just got annoyed with her brother! Probably like that with your piggies. x)
