Hi everyone!

hope you are all well.

Could you please tell me if Mange or other flee/lice problems can affect humans. My little piggie Trixy is quite sick as you may know from my last posts. However on top of his problems he now has mange and I'm treating him for this. The thing is, his cage is in my bedroom as i have a house share. Even though i keep windows open i am starting to feel a bit itchy myself.I think it could just be my imagination as everyone gets itchy at times and i can easily too at times but just wondering if its something that can be passed on.

Many thanks everyone! you have been so helpfull and supportive

Gill xx

The mites and lice that piggies get are host specific so it would be pretty unusual (though not impossible) for you to have a reaction. Bear in mind it could also be the hay/bedding.

I didn't it could affect humans either. I agree could be the bedding. This time of year, the hay etc. Maybe try an anti-histamine, for you that is, not piggie ;-) Get well soon Trixy x

hoping trixy gets better soon, as you are in the UK it could be heat related or hay fever for you to be itchy or as the others say the bedding could be the cause. get better soon trixy :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Apparently the Trixacarus Caviae mite can temporarily infest people, according to Pet Education .com I remember reading it a while back. Don't know what to suggest though sorry

No I totally don't believe you can get mites/lice from pigs. The only thing that can affect humans is cat fleas. I think pigs can get cat fleas, although not sure on this. Think it's rare.

If you were going to pick anything up it would be from handling Trixy near your skin - i.e. holding him up to your neck or face. If you handle him wear long sleeves. I didn't handle my pig when she had mites, only because it was uncomfortable for her.

They can live on you long enough to be transferred to another host but they don't breed or "infest" people. It's why they're called Trixacarus caviae ;)
