Hi everybody,

I'm hoping to hear from anyone who has had similar experiences with their piglets. So to start off I have two, three year old female Abby's. Daisy, who is my extremely intelligent, inquisitive, mellow, kind but at times forceful dominant piglet. As well as Lola, who is my quirky, athletic, energetic, cautious, and very lovey dovey piglet. They live indoors in a two story 32 square foot c&c cage with an always open exit leading to about another 40 square feet of fleece liners. They have the freedom to roam an entire bedroom but 99% of the time stay to their area. They always have 2 different types of hay available, multiple water bottles, and a forage tray thing that offers bits of hay, oxbow or small pet select treats, and an all natural mix of forage herbs and bits. They get a leaf of green leaf lettuce each every morning and a tiny bit of pellets and then a variety vegetable dinner plate with green leaf lettuce and bell pepper always mixed with two other guinea safe veggies. They see an amazing local exotic vet semi annually and of course immediately if something else pops up.

OK on to the issue. Daisy has always had grittiness or bits of sludge in her urine. She drinks water at a normal rate and has always been around 2.5-2.7lbs. Last week, one day only, I noticed two small urine patches that were discolored (brown to my eyes). I knew it was Daisy, rushed to grab some 100 percent cranberry juice, diluted it and gave her 1ml from syringe and watched her like a hawk. No change to her usual self whatsoever. Next day sent pics to vet who said not enough evidence to sound UTI infection. Side note this was 2 days after a basic checkup for both of them. Fast forward to today, while doing my cleaning and changing liners as they eat dinner I notice multiple very pink Urine stains. Minutes later Daisy walks directly in front of me sitting on a fresh fleece liner I just layed down and urinates. It's pink in color. She didn't make a peep, didn't hunch over, didn't act different at all. I am around these two for like 75% of my free time and they are both still acting like business as usual. Running around together, munching hay, doing their thing. I will post pictures of the original 2 discolored urine stains, their general living quarters, followed by the couple pinkish Urine spots and fresh spot. How can this be happening yet no UTI symptoms or change in diet or anything else I can think of that might make it normal?

Ok loading pics is being weird but here are pink stains from earlier today and the last one is of when Daisy went potty right in front of me

Here is the odd discolored urine stain from last week and just a general pic of their living space.

Hi. I’m sorry Daisy is unwell. I’ve never had sows but are you sure it’s pee? Could it be coming from her womb or ovaries? Just a thought. I hope she gets sorted out soon. Good luck.

Also they have an amazing living space 😁

I'm quite positive it's pee. While I was sitting down on one their liners cleaning, she paused from eating veggies and literally walked 5 inches in front of me and pee'd. The last picture of the original 3 that I posted is from this. The odd part is she is 100% acting and eating as if it's just another day in paradise!?

And thank you, it's a lot of work! I rlly want more Abyssinians.

Please don’t give your girl cranberry juice. It’s high in sugar and not suitable for them. I was going to say you should have it checked out but saw the vet thinks there’s no need. Keep an eye on her for any further symptoms and have her seen then.

I purchased 100 percent unsweetened cranberry and diluted it down to 50/50 with water and only gave her 1ML.

Per Guinealynx- "If your guinea pig has recurrent UTIs, try offering plain unsweetened diluted cranberry juice. Antibiotics are required to cure a UTI but cranberry juice may interfere with its development, cutting the incidence of UTIs in half."

I already offer 1-2 urinary support treats per week, but seeing the above quote under guinealynx medical reference for UTI I didn't see the harm in trying 1ML. Is this outdated information that's no longer recommended as support until Vet can diagnose?

Ok, well I'll move forward with that in mind thanks. I mean that's definitely pink color in the urine aka blood correct? Even though there is no change in food and water intake, daily behavior, weight, and food intake; is this not cause for alarm of definitelm issues and scheduling a more in depth examination for possible UTI or related issues? My exotic vet had only seen the brownish discolored urine picture and didn't advise more action necessary and they were closed by the time I took pics of the pink color in urine spots.

I would recommend having her checked out just to be sure. It could be the beginnings of one or could be oxidised urine.

Pink urine does not necessarily indicate blood. There is a natural due called porphyrins which can colour the urine but it actually test negative for blood. Equally clear urine can contain blood.
Urine tests will be needed to determine what is happening.
Porphyrins can be pale or intensely coloured but may signify the onset of an infection/cystitis/urinate tract issues (sludge etc)

Hmm ok I'll do that. They have both always seen the same exotic vet their whole life and he is pretty much everything I could ask for aside from maybe having a longtime Guinea Pig specific specialist available. Unfortunately they are closed until Monday now. The after hours, weekends, and emergency exotic vet practice here in San Diego, Ca I personally try to avoid. Past experience has left me feeling no better off than I already was and with a BIG hole in my pocket. I'm inclined to wait until Monday for my vet as I'm positive they will fit me in their busy schedule as they have in the past for necessary immediate medical intervention. Any objections to that?

Monday (or in next two weeks) is fine. I wouldn’t say it’s an emergency.

Out of curiosity I do it's possible to put hydrogen peroxide on a q tip and dab it on a recent urine spot, if I catch a recent discolored one in time, and it will fizzle if blood is present. Has anyone tried this? Obviously we're heading to a vet regardless but just wondering if anyone has done this or something similar to definitively rule out possible blood on a weird spot they noticed.
