Pine cones as toys

Safe or not?

I had an idea that guinea pigs might enjoy chewing and playing with pine cones, as I have a plentiful supply of them, but have read many conflicting opinions on whether it's safe or not.

I've sterilised them in the oven by baking at 220 for 20 minutes which I've read now makes them "safe" but I'm not sure.

If they digest any sap will it be poisonous?

I bought my bunnies some from the hay experts, don't recall it saying they were treated in any way. Mind you, the buns totally ignore themrolleyes. Not tried them with the piggies.

I think if you have done what you have said (sterilised them in the oven by baking at 220 for 20 minutes) does make them safe. Don't take my word for it though, wait till someone a bit more knowledagable replies I say.
