I'm collecting two new pig cages tomorrow, so I will have a spare indoor pig cage...

I've decided that, if I can work it space wise, I want to convert the indoor pig cage into a hamster palace for little Peanut.

The only problem I'm seeing though, is that the gaps between the bars are quite wide...

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can (safely!) make the gaps narrower? I think she could quite easily slip through them at their current width! She's an average sized syrian, but they sure can squeeze!

All suggestions gratefully received!

Would putting mesh around it be any use? Maybe her little teeth could bite through it. I do not know.

Oooooo! I'd like to know this too, i have a spare rabbit 100 cage that I'd LOVE to create into a hamster palace for thimble. I posted a question on the hamster forums about this a while back but noone had any ideas, so if you do find one I'll be keeping a close eye on this thread :)

The only thing I can kind of think of, is the thick-but-small squared mesh that you can buy in sheets? http://www.meshdirect.co.uk/Wire-Mesh-Galvanized-c-1.html Like that...

I'm thinking I could do a wonderful (:x) job with some cable ties?

I reckon it would look pretty naff, but it'd be a great home for a hamster!

Or, alternatively, I could just put a little post in the middle, and attach a bit of string to her leg, just long enough for her to reach the edge of the cage, but not escape :(|)

Hahahhaa! I love the string theory idea....the only thing is my last DIY job with cable ties and mesh led thimble camping out in the airing cupboard for two days....:))

Would love to see your cage if you do it, I might even send my cage to you....:(|)

Just thought hamsters nibble bars and things, maybe mosquito net isn't the best idea :)) malletheadmallethead

I'm having one of those nights haha.

I've just had a thought....

My current "C&C" Cage is made of panels, instead of grids.... (Excuse the mess & Boxy says hi)

I'm wondering if I could cable tie these (as you can see, they have a small hole at the top and bottom of each panel) to the inside of the cage, meaning that with the cage base, and another non-grippy surface, she can't escape!

Kinda like this (I need to get out more!)

I could try it, and see if it works - if it's successful, and you want some panels, I'd be happy to send them to you just for the price of the postage.

also, you can get c&c grids that are like small mesh rather than big cant think of any way to describe it other than that!

I thought that, but I'm soooo poor right now (thanks to Student Finance England, and the fact I'm now living on £200 a month with outgoings of £700+ a month :{, but that's another story!) I can't really justify large costs, when she already has a perfectly good cage.

Then again, it's student loan time again in October (unless I get the nearly £3000 they owe me before then!) so I could spend out a bit then...

i tthink this would work fine :))

I think it would be safer to just use cage mesh (you can get it in wilkinsons) over the bars cable tying them on. If your syrian is anything like any of mine then I would worry he would chew the panels at the edge seeing that they are plastic he could ingest this/escape.

Ive seen a meshed 100 before and it didn't look bad.

if you did this, and were a little worried about the escape thing, could you fit the whole cage into the bathtub for the first few nights so if little hammy makes a break for it, they cant escape into the big wide world? you could then check the panels/wire for any chew marks if hammy is still inside the cage and can see if its going to stand up to hammy chew abuse :)) I'm not sure how big the cage is but ive done this with smaller cages a few years back with mice in them when i wasnt sure if the bars were too far apart.

To be honest - she can't go anywhere if she escapes in my room. She runs around "free range" anywhere - it's all piggy proofed, so there's no wires or anything, there's nowhere she can slip into and disappear. Also the cage wouldn't fit into the bath!

I'm thinking I might just wire it up anyway with wire and cable ties...

I'm sorry but I have tears of laughter rolling down my cheeks, I don't know why but that drawing of the hamster on the right has me in stitches I love it! :))

Thats a brilliant idea i might try this idea out myself too and see how it goes. :)
