Hii my piggy bisquit is a male, 3 and half years.
I noticed he stopped eating hay and selected veggies that were softer to chew, before he would eat everything never a picky eater. Quickly he lost a lotta weight, used to weight about 1000 grams now he’s at 640 grams, he looks very unhealthy, skinny, weak not active at all. I took him to the vet, he said his back teeth were overgrown so he had them trimmed and said he should go back to eating hay normally. It’s been one week since I took him to the vet and my piggy is worse. He’s not eating hay at all, he at least now eats pellets and all veggies I give him but is not gaining weight, he looks very weak, not squicking at all I would say he even sounds like he’s got a cold or something, his poo is very soft and walks all hunched before the vet he was standing and squeaking. I can’t afford another vet visit idk what else to do. Please help thank you.

I’m sorry to hear that your boy is unwell. Was he given any painkillers or antibiotics following his teeth trim? Sometimes they are scared to eat again because of the previous pain experienced.

As hay is the most important part of their diet, when they stop eating it you have to replace it. For now, while you order some recovery food, offer him mushed pellets every two hours. You’re aiming for minimum 60ml in a 24 hour period. Hopefully the recovery food will arrive soon and you can switch him to that.

Also move to weighing him once daily (probably mornings best) to see whether you need to adjust the amount of top up you’re giving him. You are aiming to help him at least maintain his weight. If he puts on a little then that is a bonus.

Have a read of the guides below. I hope he starts improving soon. If he’s really not then I’m afraid he will need to be seen again. Is there a family member or friend who would be willing to help you with the vet bill? Or could you speak to the vet practice and see if they’ll let you pay in instalments?

Wishing you and your boy the best.

Not Eating, Weight Loss And The Importance Of Syringe Feeding Fibre

I’m sorry to hear this.

You need to urgent syringe feed him (if you aren’t already) as per the information and the guides linked in. At this point your aim is to stop any more weight loss. He is unlikely regain weight until his medical issues are fully resolved, and even then it takes weeks to months to regain weight particularly as he has lost such a lot.

Eating veg and pellets is fine but jointly they only make around 20% of the days food intake meaning without hay he has lost 80% of his food intake and this is why he will continue to lose weight without being syringe fed.

It’s likely his poops are soft because he isn’t getting enough fibre - hay being the most important part of their diet.

He really does sound that he needs to return to the vet for a follow up.

Guinea pigs don’t get colds, they get bacterial respiratory infections. if he is behaving as if he is congested or has noisy breathing, or appears to be in any pain, then this is another thing he needs to see a vet for.

I hope he is ok

I have been syringe feeding him critical care and blending it with treats cux he doesn’t like it on its own but I feel like is not doing much. He’s having discharge out of his nose now and lots of white discharge in his eyes. He walks kinda limping too idk what else to do.

How much syringe feed are you getting into him in each 24 hour period? It needs to be a minimum of 60ml. So he needs to be fed every two hours.
If he is losing weight at each daily weight check then he needs to be syringe fed more.
Syringe feeding is not about making them gain weight, it’s about stopping any more weight loss. He will not gain weight again until he is over his illnesses and eating fully and properly for himself.

He does sound to be quite unwell though and he needs to see a vet again asap.
