I am building my pigs a new cage, it is wood based/grid, thanks to my local flooring store I have a huge scrap piece of vinyl to cover the base of the cage. I want to paint it, my 3 year old will want to help, even though the pigs won't come in direct contact with the wood/paint I want to make sure it is safe for them. What should I look for when selecting a paint? A certain brand, will no-toxic work?

my grids are black, what color should I use?

You are in the USA so I cant help.

But some paints will state they are totally pet safe on them, in the UK I know of only one brand that states this and its a hardware stores own garden furniture paint.

Perhaps google it :-)

Hi I've been looking it to this myself and have been emailing lots of companies. The one that's come back to say it is safe is by Proteck. This is what they said

"I would recommend our Wood Protector range for use with your animal housing. Wood Protector has a BSEN71 pt3 Certificate deeming it safe to use around birds and animals. Once the coating is dry it will not leach or disperse in water and none of the chemical components will cause harm to the guinea pigs if they have a nibble on their house.
We would recommend that you keep them out of the house for at least 24 hours until the coating is completely dry and cured."

It doesn't look like they ship to the USA but it would be worth googling pet safe wood paint and emailing the company to double check.
I look forward to seeing pictures when it's done.
