so recently my guinea pig hasn’t been eating & he seems like he’s struggling to keep himself up. I tried to feed him i’m some banana & he tried to eat it but he couldn’t. I’ve had him for about a year now & he’s never had anything wrong with him. I wanna say he’s about like 2 years old. I can’t go to the vet bc it’s expensive but If you know what this could be please let me know what i can do to help him .

Will he eat hay or grass?
He may have a dental or digestive problems, he really needs to see a vet quite quickly for a proper diagnosis by the sounds of it :(

We're a UK based forum so the majority of members will be offline as its nearly midnight here.

Is he still pooping & peeing OK?
Is he mouthing at the food, but can't eat?
Cut food/veggies into thin strips & try with that.

U may need to syringe feed him if he's not eating. Pour hot water onto his nuggets & leave to cool, try giving him that-see if hes interested in eating.

Sorry but a vets appointment really is needed.

Thinking of u & fingers & paws all crossed here for a full & speedy recovery xx

Hi!

Please have your piggy seen by a vet as an emergency as soon as possible. If a piggy is collapsed/unable to get up and move around and unable and not just unwilling to eat, this means unfortunately that their body may be in the process of closing down.

How long is 'recently' and how long has your piggy been without food and water exactly? :(

Please take the time to read these guide links, which you may find helpful:
Emergency, Crisis and Bridging Care until a Vet Appointment
A Practical and Sensitive Guide to Dying, Terminal Illness and Euthanasia in Guinea Pigs

PS: I have put the problem in the title and toned it down. We do our best to answer all threads as soon as one of us comes on, considering that this forum is UK based.

hi thank you, he won’t swallow anything, he kinda just keeps it in his mouth but it seems like he has trouble swallowing anything i give him. I can’t tell if his pee is really dark or he has diarrhea. I might call a vet to see what they tell but usually it’s very pricey to go see a vet.

This started like yesterday when i noticed he wasn’t squeaking as much as he usually does, but he was still running around his cage & stuff.

He does sound very poorly :(

Will he take blades of grass or hay from you if u feed them to him individually?

Does he have damp-dishcloth smelling breath? Could be a sign of oral thrush making it uncomfortable for him to eat. Although it could be dental generally.

Blockages in the mouth or digestive system are also a possibility as is bloat. They all need varying types of treatment to give him a fighting chance.

Please get him seen by a vet, I know the US is frightfully expensive for veterinary care, but unfortunately he does sound like he needs it :(

Healing vibes & a big hug for you xx

If he is unable to swallow, then that means that there is either a blockage/major problem somewhere in the digestive system between mouth/throat all the way to the anus or the gut has stopped moving altogether.

How many hours since you noticed that he has stopped eating and drinking? Have you checked the breath whether that is very strong smelling? Have you tried a teeny bit of water to see whether that is still going down, like or two drops of water or 1/10 of a small syringe?

With problems coming on and progressing so quickly, something serious is going on. Guinea pigs are prey animals; they are wired to suppress symptoms to an amazing degree so when they are showing they are ill, they already very ill unfortunately.

Please take the time to read the guide links in my first post. They contain all the information and resources you need right now. We can only guess wildly, but that speculation won't necessarily help you.
