Piggle-friendly varnish

Does anyone know if you can use wood varnish on the inside of the hutch/cage. If so, is there a certain safe brand? Did not know if varnish could be used as piggles will obviously be chewing the wood.

If it is not safe is there anything you can recommend to stop the pee soaking into the wood?

I was under the impression that plastikote (sprayable laquer type stuff) could be used for hutches and cages but I've not used it myself.
