New Born Pup
Hello! I am new to this forum. I recently got two Guinea pigs because my last one had passed away. I got them from a pet store... I know, I realize that was bad and have refused to support them since. Sadly no guinea pig shelters are near me nor needed to be adopted at the time.
The moment I brought my girls home, I knew something was up. They seemed a bit tired for such young things but I thought maybe because they weren’t settled yet, that was why. They began sneezing way more than a guinea pig should and I realized they must have URIs. I took them to an exotic vet and got some baytril. The one guinea pig cleared up very nicely but the other needed another week plus some doxycycline to get rid of the stubborn infection. For a week or two they were finally great! Playful, eating, drinking, noisy, etc.
Then, the one who needed a boosted dose with doxycycline to get rid of her URI before, made a strange hooting noise. I thought she got grass up her nose but saw nothing there. The noise stopped within a couple hours and didn’t return until 3 days later. I was confused, thinking did it happen again? Keep in mind, both of my piggies acted completely normal and active during this, too. A couple more days went by and the noise came back for a short time. Finally I brought her to the vet with a recording of the noise. Vet said she was perfect otherwise but seemed to have a tiny bit of fluid in her lungs from the URI most likely, so she had pneumonia and was put on the same meds for just a longer time. The other guinea pig began sneezing again and making a horrible huffing sound occasionally so I too brought her in and I was given more of the same meds for her pneumonia: doxycycline and baytril. It’s been 2 weeks for the first piggy and she still occasionally makes that awful cracking hooting sound. But is fine otherwise. Her meds are almost done and I can’t figure why she does it or what’s wrong. The other guinea pig still makes her huffing noise but she’s only a few days on the meds so far so I’m being patient. Her sneezing did stop though.
Is it possible the first piggy just has a stubborn infection?! I don’t understand why she goes from perfectly fine, doing all normal things, and then after a week for about an hour makes a distressed cracking hooting sound. I’ve paid crazy amounts in vet bills trying to get them better since I got them in mid October of this year. Poor babies can’t seem to get to 100%. Any ideas or recommendations would be much appreciated
