Hi Everyone! I am new to this site but wanted to ask a question. I have to piggies (both female) about 2.5 years old. I am trying to potty train them. I want to start putting fleece down as their bedding but I cant seem to get them to stop pooping in their home. They dont really stick to one designated area or corner. How can I do this? and is it difficult to clean the fleece if they arent potty trained? I just want them to have more comfort and cute stuff.

I have never been able to toilet train a piggy. Mine mostly poop in their cabins as it is where they spend most time. With fleece you remove poops two or three times a day and wash it every three days. You will need two layers of fleece and something underneath such as towels.

have you tried covering the lotter trays? Thats what i do and majority of wees and poos done in there. They like privacy. Still get some in hideys but no wees

Piggyfan, thanks for the info. I was wondering about whether to put something under the fleece or not. and madguinealady, great idea. I never thought of that. Maybe ill set up a little tent over their litter box... or better yet, make a mini litter box for inside their igloo? it is quite large. over a foot.

You can encourage piggies to pee in the litter tray to a certain extent, but they will also pee when they are fast asleep, so using an absorbent layer under the fleece is advisable.

Guinea pigs need to eat up to 80% of their daily food intake as nutrionally rather poor hay - that is how their digestive system is laid out - but that also means that they are poo machines as they need to process a lot more food stuff than protein (i.e. meat) eaters like dogs and cats who get their nourishment from a more compact food source and therefore need to process a lot less volume and a lot less often.
