Junior Guinea Pig
Both or one of my six week old guinea pigs keep having excess calcium pees (large white chalky spots) and sometimes even white pieces in their poos. I'm trying to figure out why. They've been having excess calcium pees since I got them, which was a little over a week ago. They've been getting a small amount (4 ish grams each) of really good pellets in the morning, unlimited meadow hay I got from a local farm, and usually some romaine, zucchini, green pepper, and cucumber in the evening as their staple diet along with the occasional small piece of carrot, blackberry leaves, or another treat veggy. Our water hardness was tested last year and we have soft water so I don't think that's a big issue either.
According to my research none of these things are super high in calcium, so I don't know what the problem is. I know calcium pees are normal, but I don't know if I should be concerned that they seem to have a lot of excess all the time. The only things I can think to do would be to stop the pellets completely or exchange the romaine for another lettuce. The only lettuce I found at the store today was chicory which I got for them to try but I'm not sure if they can have that every day or not. They were just at the vet and she gave me some extra vitamin c pills to combat it, but other than that she didn't seem to concerned. They have another vet appointment next week so I might ask again, but I am feeling a bit frustrated because I can't figure out what the issue is.
