Hi,
Our piggies are living in the living room and it hasn't really been a problem since we had them first (February), but we have now recently noticed that they/i.e their cage have become a bit more smelly. We are thinking it might be because of the heating (it's been freezing up here in Scotland and we have bumped the heating up), so they seem to be drinking more and hence probably pee more. Is that something that is well known? Any tips and advice welcome - we like to have them in the living room, but it might put some visitors off ;-). We change their cage frequently, i.e. every 4 days I'd say...

Hi and welcome to the forum!

What kind of bedding are you using in your cage?
Are you using fleece or substrate?
That can sometimes make a difference to smell
Some people find substrate smells cleaner while others find fleece smells cleaner
Do you spot clean?
That can help keep smell down if your clearing out poop everyday

And some people find using a hay tray helps as they like to lie in it and therefore wee more often in it and you can clean that more often then the cage as a whole
:) :)

We are using substrate, we don't spot clean, it seems like an impossible task ;-) Our piggies are poo- machines :-). No, we don't use a hay tray, we just put the hay on one of their boxes and in no time it gets pulled down and trampled... Do you think it's the poo that smells, I am thinking it be the pee more, but not sure...It's not too bad and I guess you are getting used to if you are the owner, I just don't want our visitors to run away....:-)

The poops smell a fair bit. I would try spot cleaning. Buy some vinyl gloves and poop pick. I just use fleece but at the rescue I volunteer at we poo pick daily. There are sometimes 30/40 piggies in and there’s not really any smell.

Ok, there's another task! I am sure my son won't be too impressed doing this...Hahahaha. I just can't believe how much they poo. We change the cage and by the time I had a cup of tea there are another 15....:-)

Ha ha ha. They’re poop machines. But poops are good it means they’re healthy.

I use a cat litter scoop to scoop out the poo and old hay and it's the best tip I have come across and makes spot cleaning so much easier. I spot clean at least once a day sometimes twice if the mess is bad and change all pee pads daily and I never smell any piggy smells unless they are in season, they tend to smell quite strong when they are in season.

My otehr question would be how many piggies do you have and how big is their cage?
I find the larger the cage the less smelly it is, but I am also a big fan of hay trays (plastic box with newspaper on the bottom and stuffed with hay).
I change the cage weekly and the hay trays daily (every second day if I don't have time), and this reduces the smell to almost zero.
