Poppy Davis
Junior Guinea Pig
One of my friends has two male guinea pigs. They are about 3 1/2 years old. I myself have 4 male piggies who i love dearly and find it incredibly difficult to see her pigs in the condition that theyre in. Every time i go over, they are lying in masses of poop and urine. She supplys them with little to no hay and just pellets with the occasional vegetable treat, and bottle of water. They used to be housed together in one of those miniscule inside cages that you can get from places like pets at home (i will try and attach a picture) however they started to fight a lot (not a surprise considering that there wasnt nearly enough space for one pig let alone two) so they then had one of those plastic cages each. The last time I went over, they were both lying on the bottom of their cages, in a pile of sawdust and poo, motionless other than continually pooing (not really sure how to describe it.) Their nails were so long that they were curling to the side.
Since then she has moved house and has informed me that they are now outside in a run, but i havent seen any photos and I'm not sure as to how credible her description is when she says its plenty big enough, considering she thought that their cages before offered them plenty of room. I have tried to gently inform her that they need 85% of their diet to be hay, 5% pellets and 10% fresh fruit and veggies, i have offered on many occasions to clip their nails and to clean them out. However, despite this she (to my knowledge) continues to keep them in atrocious conditions.
I have no idea what to do now, as i really cant afford losing her as a friend as i only have one other. If it were up to me i would take them into my care but I'm 99% sure she would decline the offer. Does anyone have any idea as to what i could do? She is only 13 and myself 14, but they have been in this condition for too long and it needs to stop. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
