When we first got the piggies they made no sound whatsoever obviously because they were a bit freaked. However over the last two days it seems they have gone bananas, they are shrieking and it's LOUD! I don't mind at all, in fact it's very cute but just wondering why do they do this? Is it a distress call, just playing or what?

Ta!

depends on what they are calling they may be shouting for food, if you are chasing them to pick them up then it maybe a distress call. Someone i am sure can post links of guinea pig talk

Thanks it's not when I am chasing to pick them up and I don't think it's food related either as it's usually when they've been fed, do they do this when playing as they are usually running about when they shriek?

sounds like they've found there little voices & want to let you know they are there do they shrieking wheb your talking to them?

oliver my little baby was so quite when i got him (didnt help that jake turned in to over protective dad!x>>) now hes shrieking all the time feeding time play time but when i go & talk to him he'll just sort of put his head on one side & look at me with his pink eyes like to say what then goes off pop corning & shouting he's so cute x)

If I go near their cage they go quiet or they hide, they are still very shy. They do it when I'm not in the same room like if I go upstairs or something...

Hoggle is like this, he really screams, it is funny! It is only when he hears the veg noises though, I love it, I wish Ludo was the same but he just makes little mumble noises, think he is telling Hoggle to shut up! :(|)

Looks like your two youngsters have found their voices! Some youngsters can be VERY vocal.

Make sure that one is not bullying the other. The protest screams could be from that - they are a way of saying "don't you dare come near me and be horrible to me". They are usually part of the latter part of dominance/relationship process when the underpig defines how far it allows itself to be pushed. Usually, the top piggy rescpects that and they settle down afterwards.

Normal behaviour, they will quieten down over the next few months.

Thanks.

I did think this but would they still snuggle up together asleep if one was bullying the other?

Look at it more like defining the small print of their relationship! But the bonding stands. Young piggies on the move and at play are always noisy!

PS: I have a young sow who I have renamed Telyn=harp because she just can't shut up (except when she's sleeping or up to no good!) and has a REALLY loud voice!

I just took their food bowl out to do their veggies and they both went crazy, wheek wheek wheek wheek........

That's the first time they've done a "we're getting fed and we're so excited wheek" lol!

So so cute!

Mine have sussed it to the point where it's me coming down the stairs in the morning (never my hubby!) to anything moving in the kitchen (but especially the fridge, doors, chopping board, rinsing)...

Wiebke

Ours are the same they come to greet us as soon as we come into the livingroom doesn't matter what room in the house we have been in they always presume its been the kitchen. As soon as you open their cage door in the morning they are up at the bars chewing them or Maurice usually streaks his neck out as far as it will go to see what I am bringing them

Mo used to be the noisy one and Jules hardly said a word but now its Jules that starts the noise so his nickname is noise bag lol

Mine are so unbelievably noisy. The sound of the knife I use for their veggies sends them wild. But so many things set them off. The fridge door opening, a carrier bag rattling, me coming home with shopping bags. Sometimes I only have to move slightly on the sofa and it sets them off!

And they cannot stand me daring to sit near them eating. It's like they think all food should be for them.

They got into the habbit of rattling the bars on the cage and sometimes they're so loud I can't hear the telly. Bernie started to grab a cage bar with her teeth and then slide all the way down it like she was playing the harp. Was so funny to watch!

Our Wigat goes berserk jumping up and down and sqeaking like a banshee if you put the key in the back door lock

He knows he's going out to play!

OMG, Your avatar picture, what kind of piggie is he/she? Don't know why but they look very unusual... Can I pignap him lol?
She's a Hienz 57 tortoiseshell shorthair with a split colour coronet, if that makes any sense. Check out her album, but as a newbie there are only two photos.
