Dear piggy fans,

I have two 10 month old (roughly) female guinea pigs and they are destroying my house, which is rented so I get in big trouble if there is any damage!

They have constant freedom in the bedroom and access to their cage with lots of tubes, bits of card etc to chew and play with but STILL chew everything. They have eaten parts of my wardrobe but have now caused alot of damage to the skirting board around the bottom of the walls. This is really serious as I don't own the house and lose money if there is damage. What can I do to stop them?! I'm moving to a new house in a few weeks and cannot let it happen there as it has just been done up. PLEASE HELP!

I've read that spraying hairspray or rubbing soap on places that they like to chew can deter them but I'm not sure this is safe? I've bought chews for them and given them pieces of wood etc to distract them but they still prefer the house! Any advice would be great...HELP ME!

ps - A few months ago you gave me some advice re; my fighting sows. I'd like to thank you for the advice you gave me as they are now very happy together and have completely stopped fighting!

two furry termites

i would suggest you put them into a run to stop them chewing the wood and other things in the house. it might be also a good idea to get their teeth checked to see if they need trimming or whether they have splinters in the mouth:a04: i would NOT use the spray or soap to stop them :a30: if you don't want them into a run perhaps put things in front of the wood to stop them! good luck so glad the girls are getting on well together! sending hugs and to your two little termites:a14::a14::a14:

What about a c&c cage?

You can have the cage any size, and just block off areas you don't want them to go. :)

The only problem is the skirting board goes all the way around the room so I'd have to cover the entire thing off. What can I use to add onto the door of the cage as an enclosure? I've tried using towels but they just trample them down and end up chewing on the bottoms of the walls again!

My girls chewed the bottom of my cupboard doors in the kitchen. Our house is rented as well but luckily you can't see where they've chewed unless you get down on bended knee. Luckily they have since stopped. Apart from putting them in a run, I really don't know what else to suggest as you can not stop a piggy from chewing. I tried to stop mine from chewing the wooded partician in their hutch but nothing works so now I just let them get on with it. :)

Rather than having free roam of the bedroom, perhaps you could set up a run area for them to play about in or a c&c cage. :laluot_03:

I would use c and c grids to block off the bits that you don't want them to get to! You could also use them linked up with connectors or cable ties to make an enclosure.

yes, I would have a c and c cage or get a run so they can run around in that. I think that is the only way!:)

Not meaning to sound stupid, but what's a c&c cage? I'll try anything! The vet suggested buying sprays that animals don't like the taste of but they only make them for cats and dogs and I'm not sure if it's a bit risky to use for such small animals as piggies!

search for C&C cage and you should find some posts on it. or go to the top of the Housing Section and there is a review page on it. You can get them from B&Q, and making other places which people have listed in posts!

good luck! ;);)

c&c cages are made of grides that you put together to make your own desired cage,

that's some examples

you can build some lovely big cages! one level cages in my opinion are better for piggies as they may fall off ramps. I've not got C&C cages, I've got shop bought cages, but they only go in them for at night really, the rest of the time they're in runs. x

Thank you! They look really good and I will definately look into it. They don't run around heaps anyway as they are very lazy so I'm sure a big one of those will be more than enough room! Thank you!
