Hi There, My piggies are currently in an outside hutch and I plan to bring them in when the weather starts to go downhill however I am worried about the rain and wind getting to them as they are only 10 weeks old. The hutch is under a pergola so it protected a bit more anyway and has a waterproof rain cover covering it right up - will this suffice in keeping them away from the rain and wind for the time being as i dont want them poorly?

How does it feel when you go to the hutch? Is it dry?

If your gut is telling you bring them in now then do it.

I don't expect they will get ill right now as it's mild.

Mine are outside with a raincover on the hutch. They will come in soon, but that is mainly for my benefit as I hate going out in the rain to feed and clean them! Weatherwise they would probably be OK for a bit longer.

Oh yes, hutch is totally dry and very cozy inside !

What is it about being outside during inclement weather that causes piggies to get URI or similar ie: is it the cold, damp, wind etc (just so i know that as and when these conditions arise, that its time to bring them in.

Also, what sort of indoor temperatures are right for piggies. Dont want them being ill from being too warm if heating etc is on. x

Claire I don't know but someone will be alng soon who does.

Your hutch sounds nice and cozy and warm, I know they are recommended to come in from Oct 31st so you have a good while yet if that's the case.

:)

Thanks Lisajazz, I know that I am probably worrying unduly but they are only babies and I want to do whats right for them.

Thank you for your help. x

Damp & draughts are what causes the problems for piggies. When i've had to bring mine indoors i've had them in our spare bedroom but haven't had the radiator on in that room :)

Thanks Niki. I am really worried as tonight its raining and windy - they are covered up though!

Is it prolonged times in these conditions or can a one off period cause probs ?

My guinea pig and rabbit are indoors always and live in the spare room, we have the radiator on in winter and there are no problems with that.

Joy xx

I would think it'd be prolonged periods of time that'd cause the problems. I've had my shed windows open when it's been windy & had no problems.

As long as they're protected from the elements & have plenty of hay to snuggle in they'll be fine; i worry far more about mine in the hotter weather :)

Nowadays mine live in hutches in a shed but years gone by my piggies lived outside in hutches with carpet & plastic covering their hutches & lived long lives thru' many winters. I had them all from babies from petshops as i never knew rescues existed :)

They have stacks of hay tonight as its windy and rainy and i was worried about them. Whilst i am sitting here stressing , they are fast asleep together, under loads of hay and totally oblivious to the stress they are causing me.

I know they probably will but when i look out the window at the hutch with the cover flapping and the rain hammering down, i feel so guilty bless them despite the hutch being filled with hay too. x

AWW Claire - they sound fine. Sounds to me like they need to come inside for your peace of mind though!

:)
