Hi all,

I've been on here for about a year now but don't get much time to post since I went back to work.

Anyway I have four indoor piggies living in C&C's in my kitchen, and my OH, after several years of saying no, has finally mellowed and agreed to think about us getting a rescue cat (I love cats and have always had them), we're thinking about a cat of 3-6 years or so who is used to kids etc, but my main concern is the piggies, obviously I can put a top on the cages, but am still a little anxious about a cat worrying them as its litter tray would need to be in the same room really.

So how much do your cats bother the piggies?

i've got two cats and they're curious of my pigs. i most definitely wouldn't trust them with them, especially my younger one but they don't really bother with them too much. i actually have my pigs outside but the times i have had them indoors they seem to get used to them pretty quickly and seem not to bother with them after a while. i guess it depends on the cat, but i wouldn't worry too much about them harrassing the pigs too much xx

I had my cat Harrison when he was four months old and he has kind of grew up with the pigs. Harrison will occasional have a sniff if them when they are out but generally he isn't bothered by them. The pigs aren't scared of him at all. They even run up to him and kiss and squeak at him.

I would never leave them alone though whilst the pigs are out as you never know.

Of course, all animals are different and if depends on personality.

Do you realy have to get an older cat? You may be better getting a young kitten from the rescue as it will then grow up with the piggys and you have hopefully less chance of things going wrong :....

My cat doesn't really bother with the pigs. She stares at them intently sometimes and when they have had floor time she has got on the floor with them. Although she has never attempted to get too close to them. All cats are different though.

I have two cats. The older one (she's about 9) couldn't care less about the pigs. She completely ignores them. The younger one (he's 4) gets excited sometimes if they're running laps around their cages, but most of the time he's unaffected. The litter tray is in the same room as the pigs too, and it's not been a problem for me.

I think, though, like others have said, that the personality of the cat could play a part, but a sensible approach (secure cages etc) will minimise any of your worries. :))

As an aside, I think adopting a slightly older cat would be a great thing to do - adult cats have such distinct personalities, but they often get overlooked in rescue in favour of kittens.

Well piggy Harold is fascinated by cat Tilly, he runs to the bars to see her, she is curious of him and sniffs but as soon as he moves she runs off, however saying this I wouldn't trust her alone with him as she is a killer and has kindly in the past bought me a huge rat almost as big as a piggy so I know she is capable if it x

Our cats have been around piggies all their lives. We had Charlotte living indoors when they were tiny kittens and they soon got bored of her. The only problem we had was when Charlotte spent one night in a different cage with her new friends and the cats could get their paws through the bars. We had to shut the piggies in the bedroom because Jazmine wouldn't leave them alone. After that they went outside in the new hutch.
We had a kitten from down the road stalking them when they were in the run once and she was so confused because she would pounce at them and they would come towards her because they are used to cats.

My 7-year old cat has always been terrified of guinea pigs for some reason. Just hearing a wheek from YouTube sends him running away. My sister's cat is slightly curious but he watches from afar. Our youngest cat is my guinea pig Almond's best friend; he runs around the enclosure while the piggy runs inside but they can never tag each other of course. Almond puts his nose up and wheeks whenever the young cat comes in the room.

I guess it would depend on the cat, but a younger one would definitely be better since it can 'grow' with the guinea pig. Sometimes cats don't really mean to hurt smaller animals, they just want to play, but there are cats who will really go after smaller animals as prey.

I have two piglets, and a 10month old cat :) At first, Oliver (my cat) was scared of them, and hissed as soon as he saw them...! That's when he was really little and I'd just brought him home, he was actually smaller than the piglets (who are probably over fed!). To introduce them properly, I sat down with the piglets on my lap, and Oliver came and had a sniff, he ended up licking them and purring...! He went through a cheeky phase of shoving his paw in the cage and poking at them, so I obviously was very firm and told him off about that. But in general, I've always believed that if you make something out to be "forbidden", they want it even more. I now leave the cage door open all the time, even when I am out (this has taken alot of time), and he jumps in when he likes, cuddles up and sleeps with them, then comes out when he feels like it. The piglets also love him, all three get on really well (people often ask if my avatar was photoshopped-it's real!).

Also, I have put the cage on top of a table and against a wall so it can't be pushed off. Underneath the cage I keep Oliver's cat litter box, and also store his food etc in a box next to it. It's really good for space saving :)
