Hey everyone, I know i introduced myself yesterday but I have a question? I tried looking through the threads but couldn't get exact answer 🙈

Have two girls here around 8 months old but one is definitely the boss and shes started vibrating and making noises at her sister... especially when her sister is in a tube we have.....

Is this normal or should I be worried of fighting or anything?

Thanks everyone 🥰

Aww OK 😊 so you don't think I have anything to worry about? Does it mean there angry or anything? She does it sometimes to when I try to pick her up... She'll jump about and make these noises 🙈

Rumbling is a dominance behaviour, she is asserting herself and reinforcing her position as dominant piggy. They’ll do it when in season for example.

I have two boars and they rumble for fun!

What would I do if they ever started fighting?

you are much less likely to see a blood drawing full on fight with sows. That’s more of a boar thing. Sows can fight though but it manifests most often as pulling fur out. If behaviour escalated and you became concerned, first you’d need to determine whether what you are seeing is dominance, perhaps one is having a strong season etc. If it became obvious that they did not like each other and could not longer live together, then you would have to separate them to live permanently in separate but side by side cages.

Thanks so much for your help and advice, I will just keep an eye on them and hope it doesn't come to that 😢

Please make sure that you only use houses and place with two exits. Guinea pig fights are generally the result of one piggy being cornered. Since sows are wired to live in small groups, fights are very rare. The sow version of a fighting bite is a mouthful of hair snatched just above the skin - painful but not damaging.

I have ordered 2 houses and they are on there way, unfortunately I did not know they needed 2 separate houses I so just had 1 but this never really seemed to bother them until 2 days ago 😢 but now I know i feel bad for not providing the right environment but this will be fixed very soon

A cardboard box with two doors cut in will make a perfect improvised hut. Unfortunately most people think that piggies love to cuddle up when the reality is otherwise; snugglers are very much the minority and will still spend part of the time apart. ;)

Yours are still settling in and are likely dealing with a stronger season.

Added a cardboard box last night with 2 holes and it has went down a treat 😊 they seem to be a lot happier 🥰 thank you

Ever since I put in the cardboard box now the girls don't come out at all... They stay in there hides and never come out... They come out and pull in there veggies 🙈 will they ever lose the want to hide away and come out to rome about? Am worried their not stretching there legs enough....

Hi, mine took a few month to be comfortable around me. chances are they're coming out at night whilst you're not there.
I notice you have them in your hallway so this traffic might be scaring them slightly. Also what I found helped them gain confidence was literally just me typing away next to them in their cage, they soon got curious and decided to take a look. Hand feeding also really helped!

Take a look at this guide

Yes they are definitely coming out at night, we can hear them after we go to bed.

Do you think maybe the hallway was a bad idea? I just didn't have a choice with space etc and I didn't want to put them in bedrooms because we don't be in our bedrooms much and I was scared they wouldn't see us enough 🙈

Would you have any tips on the other thread I put up about lighting for them?

Been trying the hand feeding but it's a no go so far 😭

No taking food from your hand is fine. It can take time so you’ll just have to be patient. If they want to hide then let them. Remember to talk as you approach their cage. When you’re doing things talk to them - whether you’re cleaning out or changing water or feeding veg. They will hopefully get used to your voice and come out of hiding.

It’s only been...just over 3 weeks which isn’t long in the grand scheme of things.

Oh that's my bad on that one I thought they had been there 8 months, Mine took at least 3 months to get really comfortable around me and take food from me. If it's only been three weeks then don't panic, they're just getting settled in and used to how things work in your house
