Hi, recently I noticed that 14 week old Pip doesn't like being stroked gently on her hind-quarters. She seems to flinch and is definitely unhappy if I continue, even butting her head against my hand to express displeasure. I've tried to check her over carefully despite this and can't see anything obviously wrong. I've noticed her scratching occasionally but am unsure what is normal level of scratching and what isn't. Scamper scratches occasionally too but loves being stroked from head to tail. Pip is otherwise a friendly piggy who is gaining in confidence with us since we got her five weeks ago.

I bought some insecticidal shampoo for small animals but have not used it yet seeing as it was not advised for use below 12 weeks and I wanted them to be more comfortable with being handled by us before putting them through a bath and dry. What do you think? I'm wondering whether to give them a bath today now that I am free of cold and can handle them again.

Mine get like that if they're getting a bit fungal, you can use Gorgeous Guineas products, or Vetsect shampoo or even human Nizoral shampoo.

How does the hair look in the area they don't like you touching?

Or it could be they just don't like being touched there (a lots of pigs don't)

Please don't use the insecticidal shampoo on her. If it's one you can buy in a pet shop it could have potentially harmful ingredients. I think you might want to investigate treating for mites - this requires ivermectin. I would see a vet if you are in any doubt.

Hi, her fur looks fine in that area - generally she has a beautiful, shiny coat - and she seems otherwise well and happy, which is why I wonder. I haven't found a small animal vet I'm happy with yet - the one I took Scamper to when she had her eye injury three weeks ago seemed a bit unsure...said it could be this or that etc but did sell me some eye drops. (Scamper's eye is fine now.) I've asked three people I know who keep guineas about a vet in the Ely area and none of them had any recommendations, saying they hadn't had any cause to take their piggies to the vet.

The shampoo is a Johnsons one that contains Pyrethrum and Piperonyl butoxide - are those potentially harmful? If so of course I won't use it but will bin it.

Where do you get gorgeous guineas products?

Put that shampoo in the bin. See http://www.guinealynx.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=32261 for what the folks at Guinea Lynx think about pyrethins. You can get the Gorgeous Guineas shampoos from www.gorgeousguineas.com. They are fantastic.

Thanks so much for these links - have binned the shampoo. Looked at the table of info on how to tell whether the problem is mites or fungal and think if it is either then it is at a very early stage because I don't see those symptoms apart from scratching.

My longhaired girls HATE being touched on their rear, jumping and wheeking away but unfortunately they need to be groomed. I think this is normal for pigs

PS I think I read somewhere that we can use baby shampoo on guineas. I have just ordered some gorgeous guineas products.

I use johnsons baby shampoo (no tears) for the dog, rabits and piggies :)

Cindy starts squeeking when i touch her hind half but i cant blame her lol she is pregnant... ;D

Same here. They make a huge fuss!
To be honest none of my pigs are particularly keen on their rears being touched. Some tolerate it more than others but I think it is a case of tolerate - not enjoy.

Oh yep! That's Tonni again! Just above the bit he doesn't like!

Its like they have a flea or something thats bugging them,Flyffyheads face is a scream when he tries to turn round to reach it

LOL same here, Sully used to go crazy also trying to turn his head around to get to THAT spot ;D
Duke just does the brrrrrrrr at me and then looks at me as tho to say, awww please don't do that ::)

My truffles doesn't like being touched near his bum either, he has long fur and he does need groomed - he only puts up with so much of it before he wheeks VERY loudly! ::)

Well, hopefully that's all it is but I ll keep a close eye on Pip. The shampoo and melt I ordered arrived today and I'm doing a spot test with the melt to check they are both OK with it before using the products.

Just an update. They had the GG coconeem melt and manuka and neem shampoo seven days ago and again today (day 7). There was still some scratching the last few days but not as much. I noticed last week that Pip had small round black spots on the skin behind her ears and wasn't sure whether they were meant to be there. After her second treatment today I notice that the spots are completely gone. Anyone seen anything like that before? No other obvious signs eg no thinning of coat or dandruff so a mystery to me.

Bokki does this too if you touch him in a place he doesn;t like he kicks.

Beni is fine though, hes so laid back he doesn't care ;D

sometimes cindy tries to roll over... its so weird and she sqeeks alot too lol wilson doesnt mind it though

Wow, I can't imagine Cindy trying to roll over at the moment, being so near her time!

One of my guinea pigs always squarks whenever I touch her but she is just a nervous Guinea Pig:))

Most piggies dont like be touch on the rear end i have found it doesnt always indicate a problem obviously investigate if she had liked it and now doesnt.

My ellah used to twitch also when i petted her rump, now she is used to me and doesnt mind as much. I dont think any piggies absolutely LOVE their rumps being petted. But hey who knows.
