One of our Boars has started biting. He has always been hard to pick up as he runs away but now when we try to catch him he bites, drawing blood. Not good when he belongs to my 9 year old autistic son. Everyone is now scared to pick him up and I don't want him to be left in a cage with no attention.

Any sugestions on how to improve his behaviour?

Try to shoo him in a corner and pick him up with a towel.

You can blow gently on his nose if he has bitten you.

Shouting won't work.

my son is now picking him up with gardening gloves on. He's fine when he's out, it's just while in his cage. Maybe when we can get him outside during the day he will be better.

How old is the boar? It might be hormonal if he's young.

I have a sow who started biting at about 4 months old (adolescence) and carried on til she was about 2. She still nips now and again if you do something she doesn't like.

It could also be a sign that the boar is in pain if it's started up suddenly.

Could you train your piggy to go into a box for lifting out?

I did this with Llewelyn who got very stressed out whenever he was handled at first. As soon as he realised that the upturned pigloo shuttle cut down on the stressy bit, he was a lot more cooperative. You could use one of those pigloos with a bottom instead, but put a soft rag and a treat at the far end inside, so that there is an incentive to go in!

He's nearly a year old. I don't think he's in pain, judging by the way he runs around when he's out. He's a very flighty piggie, will just be sitting there and sudenly fly off in one direction or other and start popcorning. Nothing like the other piggie who is very quiet and loves sitting licking your hands.

He has a little hose where he ssits and we havee got him out while in there before but usually he runs straight to the side of the cagee wwhen we go near. He seems pleased to see us but as soon as you try to stroke or pick him up he shoots off or bites. He's always been hard to pick up but only recently discovered that his teeth inflict pain when he bites human skin. I feel sorry for him as he seems to crave human company but gets over excited by it. He reminds me of my son, autistic behaviour in a piggie? :{

I've used a piece of plastic drainpipe to pick up nervous rescue piggies in the past. They automatically seem to run into it when I approach and it's easy to just pick up the pipe, piggy included :)
