I picked pig up today and she was happy at all she would not sit still when I tried to pick her up again later she would not let me she kept backing away and turning her like she was going to bite me she has never done this before. She would maybe run around a bit like a game then let me pick her up but not try and bite why is she doing this?

Guinea pigs are prey animals and very timid. They hate to be picked up. As you only got her today you should allow her one or two days just to settle in before you try to pick her up. You can coach her into a tunnel or bed to pick her up and she may find that less stressful.

Sorry I have had her about 2 months and she loves being picked up this is the first time she has done this

Give your piggy time to settle in first! Young and single piggies feel especially vulnerable in new territory. Most shop piggies have virtually not had any human contact, so they are not used to bein handled. Trust is a plant that needs time to grow. If you can, give your little one a hidey (even if it is just cardboard box ) and a safe soft toy to snuggle up with as she hasn't got company.

Oh sorry. Maybe she needed a wee. Piggies do this when they need to and we want to pick them up. Would you think about getting her a friend? It would help with her confidence.

I have had her 2 months she loves to be held I hold her 3 times a day she waits for me to pick her up and when I put her back in her cage she always popcorns but today when I picked her up she would not sit still so I put her back when I tried to pick her up about an hour ago she was not interested at all she was trying to back off and went for my hand I think she has never ever done this before why now? She is normally a happy pig

Maybe she is coming into season. Do you think she may have mites and this is why she did not want to be touched? If she is like that again tomorrow you can always check her skin for any signs.

I have thought about it but she seems very happy untill today so maybe I will get her a friend. Could she be pregnant? I have read they don't like to be picked up just before they give birth is this true?

Does she look pregnant and is there any chance she has been with a boar? If she is not pregnant then I really would get her another sow as guinea pigs are social animals and should not be kept alone.

This will explain about mites:

Sadly if you got her from there she may be pregnant. I would weigh her once a week to monitor her weight and see any gains. Do you know her age? I guess she would be a baby if she is from there?

I am sorry but I have no idea about pregnancy. If she has not grown wider I would not have thought she would be pregnant but you can ask one of the more experienced people on here.

Sounds a bit strange! have you got any pics of her as it might help the more experienced people on here suggest a reason? x

Sorry; usually not liking to be handled is a problem for new piggies - you didn't mention for how long you have had her.

You would have probably have noticed little balls forming in her belly if she was pregnant considering you are handling her regularly. She would be near giving birth considering the length of time you have had her and would look most likely somewhat pear shaped now. Only rarely does a sow not show when she only has one baby. I have handled sows on the day before they gave birth and there was no difference in behaviour.

It can be just a one off; otherwise, I would look for something like mites (many piggies don't like being touched then as the skin is very painful).

Weekly weighing is a very good way of keeping an eye on your girl's health as you can spot problems early on when they are much more easier to treat.
This is a good link to what kind of weight loss needs what kind of attention: http://www.guinealynx.info/weigh.html

It would be great if you considered a friend for your girl, even better if you'd think about finding a rescue that allows you to bring your girl to choose her own new friend herself so you can be sure that they will be best of friends! Both sows or neutered boars are an option. You will love the lively, vocal interaction and the group popcorns when they egg each other on!

Here is a map of recommended good standard and practice rescues. All piggies from any of these rescues will be health checked, properly sexed, guaranteed not pregnant (they go through a 10 week pregnancy watch if they are not born at the rescue) and virtually all rescues offer piggy dating. A good rescue will also give you support during the settling in period and throughout the life of their piggies. That is a LOT more than you get in a pet shop and is worth a bit of travel!
