Hello all!

Sorry for the late night post but I'm desperate for some advice.
My pig has been making strange noises when she breathes, I can only describe the sound as sort of like a duck!

I've taken her to the vets who have listened to her chest and said it's all clear, and she's completely healthy apart from the nasal sound.
It's quite sporadic and usually occurs when she's laid down.
I had wondered if it might be a bit of hay/grass stuck in her nose and the vet said as GP's noses are so small they'd have to put her under to look, which they'd rather avoid doing.
Instead they sent me away with antibiotics (?)

As this has been going on for about a week or so i'd be really grateful if anyone has had similar experiences or has a solution.

She's eating , drinking, pooping & peeing as usual and doesn't seemed too phased.

Thanks so much in advance!

Hi and welcome!

Guinea pigs can't breathe through their mouths, so any slight obstruction of the airways is very audible. Because respiratory infections can kill, any vet will in doubt treat for URI first.

If that is clearly not the case, check for irritants like hay dust, pollen, bedding; dry air from heating or drafts from A/C units; air fresheners, scented sticks or candles or perfumed products you are using on yourself. it can be very much a trial and error process to find out what is the case.

You can try to see whether a bowl of steaming water next to the cage can help with easing the breathing.
