Hi everyone,

I recently posted about my pig Maisie who was treated for a UTI, got better but then went downhill again and was booked in for an Xray to see if she had bladder stones or some other complication.

They put her back on antibiotics in the meantime and now she is much better and eating, drinking and pooping as normal.

I'm not sure whether to cancel her x ray tomorrow or still go ahead.. I don't care about the cost but they will sedate her for the xray so there is a risk involved. does anyone have any advice please?

Thanks for reading

I hope you can come up with a good plan together. It's good that Maisie has improved so much.

Hi!

Personally, I would still go for it so you can be sure that stones are off the menu and concentrate on other avenues, like a potential sterile interstitial cystitis in case problems return.

Keep in mind that sedation for an x-ray is not as deep and long as for a full operation; which means that side effects will be much smaller. Complications are generally related to how long a piggy is under and how tricky the procdure is, as well as with the experience of the vet and the post-op nursing team. The sedation is necessary to place the piggy in positions that may not be quite comfortable for them for the best view.

PS: The problem with doing online research is that you will always get all the horror stories and the miracles, but what you DON'T get is the vast majority of perfectly normal recoveries because they are not considered worthy of posting about. This means that unless you make the necessary correction yourself, you will inevitably get a very distorted view of any given subject. If you have anxiety issues, I would strongly recommend to avoid these places because they will hinder instead of help you with issues. There are sadly enough people around who are only too happy to parrot all the urban online myths without the necessary medical knowledge and background.

Thank you for your advice, it gives peace of mind to know that the sedation is lessened for an x ray. I discussed it with the vet and she said that as she seemed so well and there was no squeaking or blood, then we should postpone the x ray for now - but if she has blood in the urine after completing her current course of antibiotics then she will have to have it. She's on cotrim, metacam and cystophan.
