Hello everyone! My pig Sophie has been having off and on URI issues and the last vet visit we got her on ciprofloxacin because the sulfate she became too resistant to. Well that cleared up her URI, but it made her lose her appetite, she stopped eating her veggies and only eats lettuce and nibbles hay. She drinks a little bit of water but i’ve been syringe feeding her water.

What she does do is finds everything inedible and eats that instead. The carpet, cardboard, the threads on her tunnel, the fleece bedding, everything and i’m always getting up and having to stop her or cover it back up (she digs and pushes the fleece blankets so she can rip up the carpet) and she’s done this before, which is where the thing stuck in her mouth comes in.

It was a problem before, where she would have something stuck in her mouth and that time she had it I assumed it was like a thread of carpet or something stuck in her throat and at the time i couldn’t get her to a vet asap (i have to wait until sundays) but then she just got better? as in she stopped doing that and went back to eating normally. that week she wasn’t on any meds, she just reduced her eating and drinking a little but still ate considerably more than she is right now.

My question is, should i wait and see what happens? i think it might be the carpet string again since she’s making a weird sound with her mouth like opening it and sticking her tongue out and and pawing at it, it happens for a few minutes and then she stops and goes to sleep or nibbles something. She ate some pellets today but I had to syringe feed her water again. I’m so so exhausted on what to do with her I love her so much and i just don’t know what to do anymore i’ve been to the vet so much and it’s monday so i can’t go until the end of this week. I’ve checked out her teeth and it seems okay nothing visibly lodged but i can’t see in the very back like a dentist would and the vet said her teeth were fine the last time i went. I know my question isn’t really clear i guess i just need some advice on what to do.

thank you!

Please move to weighing daily (at the same time) rather than weekly. You may have to step in with syringe feeding if she is continuously losing weight. Hay makes up the majority of the diet, and if she isn't eating enough then she won't maintain her weight. What veg is she now refusing to eat? Have you tried coriander (cilantro) and bell peppers? And how about cucumber?

You will also have to find a way to secure the fleece so that she can't pull it up to reach the carpet underneath. Is there something absorbent underneath the fleece? It needs to be there to wick the urine away from the surface of the fleece. Perhaps you can clip it around the sides of the cage (not sure of your setup), or put something else underneath to cover the carpet that you can secure so she can't reach it.

I would try and get to the vet before Sunday - is there no way you can reach them?
