Hi everyone, I 1st noticed pickle had a sore looking eye last week on Wednesday and my local vets couldn't see her till Thursday evening. They found a piece of hay in her eye she was prescribed isathal to be given twice a day. They advised to start the drops on the Friday morning but I started on Thursday. She went back yesterday to see how the eyes doing and the vet said it's getting better. My friend took her as I was working, apparently they didn't put any dye in it this time, just looked at it.My question is does it look like it's getting better?the ulcer to me looks like it's gotten bigger and when I've dealt with haypoke in the past I've noticed an improvement after a few days.I was thinking getting a 2nd opinion but thought I'd post here to see what you guys think.
Many thanks

All my experiences of a straightforward haypoke have been completely resolved within a week but some do just take longer.
I would get her checked again before the weekend if you are concerned
as it does look sore.
Are you using any tear gel/lubricant in the eyes also? Is she is also on pain medication?

Yes I think I might for peace of mind.I'm not but I have heard that helps speed up the healing process so think I need to get some.No the vet wouldn't give me any metacam as they didn't think she needed it.

Aw bless her, that does look sore 😞 Eye injuries often look worse before they look better so I would carry on using the drops. When do the drops finish? I’d perhaps see a vet again before they close for the new year bank holiday
I'm not sure when they finish, the vet said to go bk the following Wednesday if the ulcer is still there.

That eye looks really sore to me. When Kiki had a bad eye after hay got under her eye lid I was given a stronger eye drop called 0.5% Chloramphenicol antibiotics, one drop 3-6 times a day and I must say I was amazed at just how fast it healed. I gave her the 6 times a day (every four hour) for the first 3 days. She also had Remend corneal repair eye drops to aid recovery. they rechecked her eye and put that die back in to make sure it had fully healed too
Have they checked there’s no more hay inside as the eyelid looks quite sore too

Good luck, it’s always a worry especially around bank holidays etc

Hi

Very sorry that the eye is still quite badly ulcerated.

Remend is the vet version but you can use any carbomer tear gel available online or in your pharmacy, like viscotears or comparable products. It really makes a noticeable difference with the healing process in the deeper layers as well as the comfort on the surface.

You have to wait at least half an hour after applying the antibiotic eye drops/gel, whether that is isathal for the standard cases or - for the worse cases - stronger chloramphenicol in order to allow them to be fully absorbed.
You can apply tear gel/veterinary eye lubricant 3-6 times a day if needed, depending on the severity. Gel is longer lasting and more effective.

Metacam brands help with the inflammation and general comfort, especially initially.

All the best!

It looks very sore. I find isathal works for the more minor problems, but prefer Exocin drops for the serious problems. Could you get to see Simon or Kim? x
I'm at work tomorrow and Saturday but if they're open those days and might have an evening appointment I could give them a ring? x

Hi all, I managed to get an appointment today with Kim for 5.40.She had a very thorough look and thinks pickle has uveitis.Ive never heard of it but she's prescribed zithromax, remend eye drops and metacam as her eye is very sore. She said that it looks like there might be pus or blood somewhere in the eye,I can't remember what part she said, she also said if this got worse there was a chance she'd develop glucoma. She wasn't impressed that my local vets wouldn't prescribe metacam.I'm so glad i went for a 2nd opinion (from the help of everyone who posted).Just hope her eye gets better soon.Kim also said she might have arthritis.

I'm glad you got a 2nd opinion, I didn't like that your other vet wouldn't prescribe Metacam. Sending healing vibes and fingers crossed Pickle heals quickly now.
I've got 2 boars on daily Metacam for arthritis, it's amazing how they run around and popcorn despite arthritic spines, hips and knees!

So glad you got to see Kim, at least you know what the problem is and Pickles has a good chance of getting better now x
