One of my daughter's piggies, Pickle, has developed a lump about the size of a pea under her chin. She has asked me to take her to the vet for her tomorrow. I have not seen it but she says there looks like there might be a tiny little scab on it. Not causing pain. Eating and pooping normally. Can anyone give me any ideas, Heather is really worried. Thanks, x

There could be various causes of Heather's piggy's lump.
Does she live with any other pigs? Sometimes, little nips or bites can become rather inflamed and infected, causing lumps on the wound area. It could also be an absces, and around the face is a common place for one of these to develop. I believe they're treated by antibiotics and are sometimes incised and drained. Pigs can also get cysts and other 'harmless' lumps. How old is the piggy?

I would advise your daughter not to panic. Not all lumps are serious and I'm sure your vet will be able to sort the problem :)

I've heard of lots of pigs like this and it's nothing serious. Could be an abcess or harmless cyst. Hard to say, best go the vet. I'm sure all will be ok.

Keep us posted,

Louise

Thanks for that. Yes two sows living together about 15 weeks old. She has never seen them squabbling, but they could have had a bit of a do maybe. I am taking them to my vet, who I have never taken GP's to. Have to say though, he is an absolute miracle worker with my dog! I have text Heather with what you have said to put her mind at rest a little bit. Thanks again. x

I would be the same if I was you but try not to worry. Good luck at the vets and let us know how it goes! ;)

I'm sure it will be okay Jane hope all goes well please let us know xxxxxx

Thanks everyone, appointment with vet is at 2.40 pm today. Hope he is as good with piggies as he is with dogs. Will let you know. x

The vet was really nice, and cuddled Pickle before looking at her properly. Said he thought she had had a 'nip' from her mate Hoggy, the lump was mostly scab which he pulled away, and this released just a little bit of goo and the whole thing was flattened. Gave me Baytril 0.1mg syringed into her mouth, twice daily for 5 days, and said unless it swells up again, or she seems off sorts, he wouldn't need to see her again. Pickle was very very good. Heather hasn't had her that long so she is not completely comfortable with being handled yet.
Thanks for all concern and advice, hopefully Pickle will be ok now. xx

Just catching up with posts since I have been away ... glad all seems ok.

Sometimes an abscess under the chin can come from a sharp piece of hay etc that lodges in the gum, then turns nasty and lumpy.

I had that on one of my piggies several years ago. It burst just before I got her to the vet ... not nice but all was ok in the end.

How's Pickle doing now?
