Sadly I aren't getting any more guineas since I lost Ruby after owning them for over forty years, I couldn't go through the heartbreak again. I think I've reached a point where I worry too much about them and I visit my daughter a lot who lives away, a neighbour looked after Ruby for me over weekends for the past year and three months but I couldn't settle when I was away worrying about how she was and couldn't totally enjoy myself as if my mind was elsewhere when I was away. Its a weird realisation like the end of an era :no:So I get my fill by looking at this section, don't know why I am writing this but I am sure guinea owners on here who love their guineas understand. X

I understand you... forty years is a very long period! and now that your life has changed you have taken the best choice. I also had a long break because I wanted to travel and nobody can look after my piggies the way I do. I also enjoyed visiting petshops (where piggies are usually living into little cages and that gets on my nerves...).
Anyway, is there a possibility for you to become a volunteer into a rescue? and, considering that many families in UK have piggies and pften need a piggie-sitter, you could consider the idea of helping them, keeping your freedom when you want to visit your daughter.

We do understand. We will all reach that point where we stop or we need a break. You are always welcome on the forum, this is one of my favourite sections too! I am so sorry you lost Ruby, she was very lucky to have had such a caring Mum x

may I post for you some pics of my piggies? I hope you like them... I have two young sows, Calipso and Calliope, adopted last March from Bologna (400km from Rome, I went there by a fast train).
These pics below were taken 2 weeks after their arrival at home

Calipso (the brown/white one on the right) was (and still is) a ball of hair, but she was skin&bones... and is still slim (but extremely agile and active!)

this below is the new pic of them taken two weeks ago and sent to the rescue as a proof of their good health (I was asked to send regularly pics of them). They are following a pellets-free diet, just a teaspoon for both as a treat... for keeping them still for the photo! They are grass-addict... luckily I have access to a lot of green areas here...

thank you for looking at my pics! :D

Hi, Yeah Rome Italy you get it I couldn't leave a neighbour to check on new guineas, to me I would feel I'd made the wrong decision and was been selfish for my own needs and can't carry on worrying while away it seems to take the shine off been away. Ruby was alot older and was very settled within herself if you know what I mean. I had thought yeah to get my fill of guineas doing volunteering. The nearest one run by volunteers is Cavy Corner, Doncaster and to be honest it's a bit far to travel. Local charities that have guineas you have to volunteer for the cats etc as well. I would def volunteer at Cavy Corner if I lived nearer though god that would be heaven, I could cuddle and hand them back. More central U.K. Seems to have more charities than where I am.

Here are my two sweeties. Mistletoe looks rather similar to Calypso and Angus.

well... the story of my journey to Bologna is a bit strange ...
The rescue in Rome had only ill piggies which had been confiscated and there was a lawsuit in court (the adoption wasn't sure for them...). Therefore I contacted the rescue in Bologna, which is actually a rescue for rabbits and is a very little private rescue (with no headquarters) managed by a nice lady survived to a cancer 25 years ago... After her recovery she felt as she should have done something good, hence she started saving rabbits and some guinea pigs. When I contacted her and we had a talk at the phone, she sent an "inspector" to me, here at home, who approved my home/family for owning two piggies; then she even asked me which piggie I would prefer to get... my daughters were in love with Calipso and Calliope, but I only told her to give me the ones she considered the best choice for me and she told me the story of these two piggies, abandoned because it was an unwanted Christmas present, the family dog used to bark at them; they had lived into a little cage wrapped in cellophane (!) because their owner was obsessed with tidiness (typical of italian women! - not me, though-) and since when they had been surrendered they had been kept at home of a volunteer who had the flat full of rabbits and had no room enough... Therefore I did not wait any longer for someone coming to Rome with the piggies (there are volunteers who offer a lift when pets need to travel) and I ran there (and visited that beautiful city!:D).
I am very proud of them... my living room is in a mess with hay flying all around, but they are able to give me a lot of joy! :luv:

I'm exactly the same we lost truffle a year ago at the age of 5 and sadly her sister 3 wks ago. We loved them to bits but after 6 yrs have decided on no more piggies even though I adore them. Like you I love to still come on here to see everyone else's beautiful piggies xx
