I clearly jinxed it last night when I said we’re all well! Just pulled quite a long piece of hay out of Pewter‘s right eye (I was as gentle as could be). It was right in the corner so can‘t really see how bad it is - there‘s a tiny bit of cloudiness that I can see where her eye starts getting darker. Poor girl is looking rather sorry for herself keeping her eye 3/4 closed. She‘s eating fine though, so that’s one worry less. Already spoke to the vets, they said to call them back first thing tomorrow morning and they‘ll squeeze us in.

Poor Pewter.
Haypoke is such a nuisance, but can be easily treated.
Sounds as if you've caught it quickly - hope her eye is OK

Oh no poor Pewter. Hopefully not too bad. Well done catching it early.

Aw, get well soon Pewter 🤕 It’s for eating not running into, silly little sausage x

Well done for getting onto the vets quickly. My Trudy is just in the final stages of recovery from a hay poke and has needed two kinds of eye drops. A second pair of hands is very helpful for keeping the piggy's head still while the drop is administered! Fortunately Trudy's 12 year old slave is very good at piggy taming. Trudy sends get well soon wheeks to Pewter.

Thank you for all your well wishes xx we‘ve been out at a drive-in fireworks display this evening and just got home. Her eye is very watery and looks pretty sore (current state of affairs in picture attached). And the poor little sausage is looking rather uncomfortable. She did get some extra coriander as a treat and her appetite remains as healthy as always so that’s good!

Will definitely call the vets first thing tomorrow and try to get her seen as quickly as possible! Will keep you posted how we get on xx

Ah I‘m glad to hear Trudy is well on the road to recovery! I‘ve already warned my OH that he‘ll have to give me a hand with eyedrops because I am very sure Pewter won‘t cooperate :)) Pewter says thank you Trudy and sends some healing wheeks for the final recovery to Trudy!

Remember eye treatment is the same for all animals so it doesn’t have to be an exotic vet.

We‘re going to our general one, yes :) he’s brilliant - not an exotic specialist but very knowledgeable with guinea pigs because his son has got 5 piggies himself. Plus he always tries to squeeze us in as quickly as possible :D

Thanks for all your lovely messages xx

Just got back from the vet; glad I took her in! Her eye is „quite a mess“ to say it in the words of our vet. We‘ve got Exocin eyedrops, some eye lubricant and I also stocked up on Metacam. She got some Metacam at the vets for any discomfort :) She is bright & alert and mad at me for taking her to the vets :)) Check up is in 5 days.

Hopefully she will be on the mend in no time.
One of mine has just recovered from haypoke. He was fine at 8am. By 9.30am his eye was cloudy and watering. luckily I was able to get him to the vet within the hour. The vet found a grass seed wedged under his eyelid which was causing quite a bit of scratching to his cornea. A weeks worth of treatment and he is now fully recovered.

Sounds like things will start heading in the right direction with the drops. Be good for your treatment Pewter!

Trudy was prescribed Exocin first, and then they added Acular at the 3 day re-check. The two in combination have done the trick.

Pewter was exactly the same - she was totally fine and 10 minutes later when I came to check if they‘re all eating their tea here eye was watery and I found a little piece of hay stuck in it. I managed to get it out, thankfully! It‘s very reassuring to hear that your piggy has recovered so quickly - fingers crossed Pewter will be the same!

She‘s already heading in the right direction I think - the lubricant seems to help with the discomfort quite a bit :) I‘m definitely not in her good books at the moment though; she runs into hiding everytime I come close to the cage - better safe than sorry :)) Poor Trudy sounds like she had quite a bad one! Glad to hear that everything turned out ok in the end!

Meg was the same when she had bad haypoke back in May. She hates to be picked up under normal circumstances. She had 8 weeks of 3 different eye drops 3 times a day with a half hour in between each one. She was also being syringe fed and having Metacam twice a day. I was not Mrs Popular!

Gosh, poor Meg! I can only imagine how unpopular I would be with Pewter if she had to be picked up this often. Because even though she loves to have a snooze on the sofa, she really hates being picked up. But just wait when I get the nail clippers out tomorrow, that’s going to be the last I‘ve seen of her for a few days :))

Had our check up today and Pewter got the all clear. Her eye is fully healed and we can stop putting nasty things in her eye which she‘s very happy about. She‘s still a grumpy sausage with me but some free roaming time downstairs and an evening cuddle on the sofa will hopefully help with that :))

She says she’s done with meds and ready for Christmas now!

Well done Pewter! Now you can stop being grumpy and enjoy your Christmas snacks and cuddles!
