We‘re currently on holiday in Wales (we left home yesterday) & today our pet sitter called me that Pewter‘s eye looks a bit worse for wear. Can you believe that she managed to get herself a hay poke on the first full day we‘re not at home? 🤦🏼‍♀️ The in-laws are calling the vets tomorrow morning and are taking her in to get it seen to. It doesn‘t look too terrible thankfully but I want to make sure there‘s nothing stuck in it and she‘ll also need eye drops. Our pet sitter is thankfully experienced with guinea pigs and will administer the eye drops as prescribed. She’s also given her some metacam tonight in case she’s in pain. What a way to start our first ever holiday away from the pigs!

Sending little Pewter lots of healing vibes, it’s typical isn’t it but I’m sure a trip to the vets will get her sorted x

Thank you! Isn‘t it just? I’m so glad we found a great pet sitter so at least I know her eye will be treated properly while we‘re gone. x

That’s always a great comfort when you can trust someone with your babies x

Sending Pewter healing vibes. I hope you can enjoy your holiday and not worry too much, it sounds like you have a brilliant pet sitter.

Thank you! I‘ll definitely be much calmer once she‘s been seen by the vets tomorrow but I know she‘s in great hands with our pet sitter; Pewter adores her. I feel like this might change once our pet sitter comes along with the eye drops, though 😂

Poor you!

Good that you have organised prompt vet care. The sooner a hay poke is treated, the easier and quicker it will heal up again.

To be honest, I was almost expecting something to go wrong - everything running smoothly would’ve just been too perfect. But at least it’s „just“ a hay poke & nothing worse.

That was exactly what I was thinking. I much rather get her seen as soon as possible so we don‘t end up with weeks & weeks of eye drops.

So typical! Pringles eye healed very quickly after he hurt it last month! Sending healing vibes ❤️

These things have a way of happening.

During our last family visit to Switzerland for Christmas 2019, one of my piggies (but not the one I had booked the emergency slot for before our departure, who thankfully behaved again on his meds) was seen for severe bouts of off and on bloat and diagnosed with a chronic gut issue right as we were boarding the plane. He'd only started to show worrying symptoms just before we were off. Thankfully, both Barri and Dylan are still with me; they are 5 years old now. Not my first holiday crisis.

Oh gosh, that sounds like a nightmare! I can only imagine how worried you must‘ve been. But it‘s so good to hear they‘re both still here. They do like to worry us, don‘t they!

Pewter has a vet appointment at 3pm today and OH‘s parents are taking her in. It‘s their first time handling any of them on their own so they‘re super nervous to do everything correctly. But at least we‘ll be able to start treating the eye this afternoon.

She‘s been to the vets on Monday and got eye drops for twice a day. So far, her eye seemed to heal quite well but when our pet sitter arrived tonight it looked a little off (see picture). It seems less swollen overall but I‘m not sure what that pink bit is. Has anyone got any ideas? We called the vets and booked her in again for another check up on Friday morning - that‘s the earliest they could do. She seems happy in herself and doesn‘t appear to be in pain but with me not being there to check her over myself I‘m still worried!

That's such a bummer . You couldnt make it up .

I took Dot to the vet because of bloat once ,came home , and hour later an eye poke , next morning vets again same vet aswell . Luckily she got away with no damage atall and it healed naturally.

Dot recently got a piece of grass seed stuck in her ear aswell. My vet said he's never seen it in the amount of years he's dealt with guinea pigs lol. Luckily it came out and hadn't damaged anything. When the seed was in there , it gave her a really bad head tilt , as soon as it came out , head went normal again .
Oh my, that is almost impressive on Dot‘s part. Ah I think I remember seeing the grass seed story on here. That was a huge seed for such a tiny ear! Since I saw this story I check their ears much more regularly than I used to, just in case.

Pewter‘s eye looks much the same this morning. She‘s still fine in herself, munching hay and annoying Benito so we‘ll leave her vet appointment as it is for tomorrow. Poor girl!
