I went to vinnny with mom and decided to look in the petshop while she was shopping. I saw a huge tank with two itty bitty guinea pigs, a nice house, toys, a waterbottle, fresh food, and chew toys. i was very impressed until i walked around and saw a full grown guinea pig in a 10 gallon tank! poor baby had hardly any room to turn and only had food and water. i asked the shop owner why he was in such a small tank when the two babies were in the big tank and he said he refused to get along with the babys and babies sell faster so they were in the display tank malletheadgrrrr i searched through my wallet and didnt have enough for him 8... i was very upset with that and though i know its bad to buy from petstores isnt it just as bad to watch the ones in there suffer? it really isnt their fault humans are so cruel. well if he is still there at the end of this week when i get paid he is coming home with me!

It's people like you, and posts like this that regain my faith in humanity! I would do the exact same thing! Couldn't stand to see an animal suffer in such a small space!

If you buy him, they will replace him with more guinea pigs. It's good you didn't buy him. If he was kept in a horrible condition, ask your mom to report the store to humane society.

That's so sad! It's hard to find pet stores that truly love their animals. I work at a pet store in the US & I try to make sure every little piggy gets lots of loving and all the meds they need if they are sick. They would just replace them though so it's a good thing you didn't buy. It's a sad world 8...

maybe they would replace him but what about him hmm... is it right to leave him. if i could just walk away and not try i wouldnt forgive myself i havent seen the other piggies yet but i saw him he was so scared 8... does anyone realize they do carry large snakes and he could very well be a meal for those if he isnt bought! the mans wife is very sweet and socialized with them until she got a job but the man is very harsh. i think petstores are wrong but its just as wrong to ignore those poor piggies just because they were sold to a petstore.

Then take action and report them. It would help all of the piggies not just that one, it would maybe stop cruel acts like that

Definitely report them. If you buy him thinking you've saved him, what about the ones that replaced him? If you buy him and the ones that replaced him, the store will keep replacing them. Will you be continuing to save all of them?

To end the abuse cycle, don't buy.

If you want to see the conditions where these pet store guinea pigs come from, see the links below. I know not all pet stores are bad, but most breeding mills are. And they'll keep breeding more, as long as people are buying.

I don't care what others say. Yes pet shops are bad but I am entitled to my opinion. If you want to buy that poor baby then you buy him. Obviously reporting the shop would be best but why can't you do both?!

You can't do both as once you've bought the poor pig you have removed the 'evidence' and when reported nothing can be done as there is no evidence in the store. Just your money in the till and another pig on order.

What if the OP tooks photos that are time and date stamped and ensured that those investigating knew she want to take the piggy? I just cannot see why being bought by a pet shop makes him less worthy of saving. And why it is alright for him to suffer if it is stopping another piggy taking his place. I really hate pet shops and I do understand where you are coming from but there must be ways round these things.

You can do both take photos before you purchSe the pig and I'm sure if they are being neglectful to him there other animals wont be much better, so call the humane society asap

who do i call for that? and i wont let that poor scared baby suffer because he could be replaced that isnt a good reason i may not be able to help them all but he is a live creature who needs help and he doesnt need to suffer just because he was born!

I'm going to call when i find out who to call but i dont think it will do much good alot of people think that that size a cage is ok :(

:)>>> i called the number i was given and they asked me for proof i said go look in the petshop they said they needed proof pow-pow but if i get a picture they cant use it cause that is illegal grrr how the h*** am i suppose to get proof?!grrrr

so frustrating i know! even places like PAH and Jolleys keep pets in shoe box size cages... mallethead
