Just wanted to post this thread to tell people that pets at home seem to be listening to the cage size rules for guinea pigs. They now stock a 1.4metre ( 140cm obviously) cage by ferplast. ( i see it in person) Its is £100 though😯. But its another step in the right direction.

Also they have stopped the sale of rabbits over easter👍.

I am waiting for them to be sold on shpock then il snap one up 2nd hand cheaply.

So yea pets at home are listening and things are heading in the right direction

yes for guinea pigs and larger animals they have really took a step ! now for the hamsters and gerbils pleaseeee !

They must be expensive because you cant fit as many 140cm cages in a lorry, so it must cost more to transport them. This is why they make the bases be able to go inside eachother

Yip, I wouldn’t buy an animal from there anymore, although it can be tempting

There are a couple rescues near(ish) me for guinea pigs and rabbits
I'm looking for a new piggie, little bit more difficult as I'm trying to get a baby this time. I only know of the one in Ayr. Are any of these rescues near Glasgow?

There are two of them, they’re called Cavy Capers, there’s one in Dundee and one in Glenrothes I think, hope they’re close enough for you
They’ve got a lot of guinea pigs and rabbits at the moment x
It’s definitely worth checking them out x

They have an xl hamster cage now. It's 70cm by 40cm. The correct size for dwarf hamsters. Also they sell hamster heavens or rat cages suitable for hamsters.

they don’t even do one cage in store large enough for a syrian, hamster heaven is an online only but i’m not sure if that’s only for my shop . they still recommend you get their tiny 30x50cm cages

I really want to make a thread, get lots of people on here to agree and give input and then email the link to pets at home head office, letting every member of the guinea pig forum have a say in what pet shops are doing wrong.

They will also see what they are doing correctly now, so it wont all be negative

We don't have any babies in the rescue (ayrs guinea pig rescue) at the moment. We are very glad as we had a large intake of sows a few months back and luckily none were expecting. Phew. Most of them now have found new homes.
I know! I was down there today! You might recognise my piggies then as they were adopted only a couple of months ago :)

That’s a really good idea!

The cage that is 2nd hand not a rabbit 🤣

Erm.. My pets at home are selling a 80cm cage and says it suitable for 2 pigs..

If I'm in later I'll get a picture. But the cage is £30

Yea all pets shops do, this is the next thing. We need them to stop the small ones and start selling more big cages

I don't like how they list where they don't get their small animals supplied from. I don't care where they're not from, I care where they ARE from. If more people were aware of the sort of mills they were coming from then a good number wouldn't shop there or purchase live animals from them..but they're not stupid, it would cost them money if people knew they were supporting mills. They're certainly better than they used to be, credit where it's due, and when I complained about the E.cuniculi Blackberry and Bramble came with both them and the RSPCA did an inspection of the supplier from what little information I got back from that, but they still have a long way to go.

Nail on the head there. I started the thread basicly saying its a step forward with the bigger cage. But its a long way to go yet

Definitely a long way to go, but I've always been impressed by the in store accomodation. There's always hay, fresh water and food, and it always looks clean. That's at least something better than all "family run" pet stores I've come across that sell pets. I've also been impressed by the sexing.. the guy who got out my piggy, the only one Ive ever brought from pets at home 4 years ago now, was very experienced with identifying sex, and really gave him a good once over before he let him come home with us. Also, the free vet check my pets at home offers came in handy, as my boy ended up with a UTI within days of bringing him home. I expect that to be a result of an underlying condition as he looked happy and healthy when we picked him up, and the stress of moving was likely the cause. However, the hamster accomodation in store is certainly too small and badly ventilated. Not to mention the multiple hammies per cage. And what's the point in stocking food that's no good for them? I'm sure people would be happy to get other food if they knew it was no good, and the better food is generally more expensive, so if anything they'd be taking in more money. Still, I don't like the idea of where they come from. I think for any pet store selling pets, particularly one this big and nationally spread, we should get information on the suppliers. Pictures of their set ups on each website (branch by branch) would be an amazing start.
