After having a wobble at my local pet shop about Guineas & Rabbits together I have now been asked by them if I would consider doing stand in shifts for staff holidays & illness.

What do I do? I could make a big difference for these animals & general education on the subject. I know I'm strong enough to do it subtley and not go in like a bull in a china shop. I could do things like just turn up with some really good care/info sheets already printed out etc give out info before people buy etc etc advise on hutch size...

HELP! dilemma

I think its a good idea! (If you want to do it that is ;D)

Pet shops arent suddenly going to stop, and it would be better for the animals if someone who has some knowledge and cares about what happens to them works there :)

Which pet shop is it? x

I'd love to work in a pet shop and make changes for the positive, I'm scared of the creepy crawlies though so would be no good!

If you think you would like it then give it a try :)

I'd give it a try, you may find the pet shop owner isn't prepared to change anything but it may be worth trying.

I have a dream now of opening a petshop with some resident guineapigs and rabbits and selling loads of toys, appropriate cages/hutches etc and if anyone wants to buy an animal directing them to rescues. I'd also hold sessions for kids on appropriate care of their pets as at the end of the day they're our future pet owners.

Its the new one in Sherwood Mandy. I might drop in on the way to nursery in a bit & have a word. What am I getting myself into!
I do actually want to do it. I just hope that I can make changes subtely enough with out them noticing. If I can get people off of I can do this - she says trying to convince herself!

they know your opinions, and yet they want to employ you - I think that sounds very good :)

I would love to work in a petshop, actually being able to give out information that is CORRECT, being able to actually DO something if a piggy in the shop is sick, etc.

Go for it Hilary!

No creepies in this one - there's the reptile shop across the road who does that & do a really fine job too. I was in there once & they refused to sell someone a small snake because they didn't believe the customer had the correct set up. It was really nice because the boss just laughed when they'd gone & said we're refusing more sales than we're making! bless him

I would do it too.

Think of the difference you could make to any future sales of bunnies or pigs. You can give the correct advice to the new owners.

I would certainly give it a go. :)

I've been it there, it's a good shop, warm mind! :)

Good luck and I sincerely hope you can make a difference to the standard of care :)

just keep in mind how you are going to deal with what you consider to be unsuitable owners, say people wanting the guinea pigs for the kids, ones that plan to keep them outdoors during the winter, to breed from etc.
I think how things pan out very much depends on how the owners feel about you turning customers away :-\

I wouldn't do it, but that is just me ::)
If you think you can do it and help, give it a go, what have you got to lose ;)
I think you will find the experience enlightening if nothing else :)

Well you can always try, good luck and i hope they listen to your advice
Would love to work in one but i'd probably end up with all the little sad cases at my place ::)

aww i've always wanted to work in a pet shop - not like PAH, but I mean a private small little pet shop..... I would probably end up coming home every night with 4 animals tucked under each arm, but would still love to do it!

If you really wanna do it - go for it!! :)

Yes i must admit I couldnt work in a pet shop either because i help at a rescue.

But I think this could be a good opportunity to make some changes...perhaps in time you may be able to broach the subject of number in rescues etc, and bring them round to the idea of only selling pet supplies rather than animals?

Maybe before you agree to take the job you could mention a little about giving away care sheets etc, and that the animals finding good homes is important to you...and how do they feel about that etc

That's good advice. At the risk of being cynical and in my opinion only, pet shop owners probably won't care too much what you do or say to the would be owners, as long as their sales figures don't drop.
It will be interesting to hear what they say if you start turning people away from the shop who want a guinea pig or other animal that you aren't happy selling to. This will be the "telling time." :-\

If you can rely on them backing you up, then no problems. Just keep in mind that people don't expect to be refused a purchase when in a shop, regardless of what they want :o
I've had people throw a strop on the telephone when I turn them down, even when I explain why. I wouldn't like to have to do it in a shop. Just something to keep in mind. It will be at times like these that you will need the 100% support of your employer.

go for it girl you can make a difference i have helped make changes in a local pet shop, and was considering working at PAH but such a big organisation is one thing a small run shop is ideal for helping change minds, I know my fav pet shop would agree with my choice of owners she knows how much they mean to me and feels exaclty the same she also has a policy of buying them back if they decide in a month they dont want them,

I'd do it and while i was there i would keep a diary of anything that you dont like and then if after say 6 months you notice loads of stuff that is wrong you have evidence! i wanted to do a undercover report on PAH but i didnt get a interview!

Well I went in & the woman wan't there so no news yet!

I only want to do it to educate & make a difference. If I do end up doing it & it is obvious that I can't I'll leave straight away - it will only be to cover hols etc

I have always wanted to own a pet shop with lots & lots of animal pens - but in the pens TV screens showing videos of the relevant animals available at local rescues. I would stock all the best stuff & no hutch under 4ft (120cm if Abnoba is reading this!).
Maybe I should do it.....
